This week has indeed been a scary and disastrous week for our comrades in Afghanistan — with the Taliban regaining control after 20 years! The Taliban is a fundamentalist group that ruled the nation for five years before the United States-led forces ousted them in 2001.
As a result of this grave issue, many have raised grave concerns about the rising number of refugees fleeing the group’s ultra-conservative brand of Islam, and the potential that the Taliban might encourage Islamist movements elsewhere in Central Asia.
With the fall of Mohammad Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai’s government in the nation, various countries have started evacuating their diplomats and citizens from Afghanistan! This includes Malaysia too. Recently, a Malaysian citizen was evacuated safely to Malaysia as the American soldiers withdrew earlier this month and the Taliban subsequently, took control of Afghanistan.
With the fall of Mohammad Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai’s government in Afghanistan to the Taliban this week, several countries are now evacuating their diplomats and citizens from the country.
The High Commission of Malaysia in New Delhi, India, which is accredited to Afghanistan, stated that the evacuated Malaysian worked for a financial institution in Kabul and had contacted them for assistance.
However, there are still two Malaysians in Afghanistan! These Malaysians work for an international relief organisation in the capital city and have made arrangements to remain in Afghanistan for the time being, according to Bernama, enclosing no further information.
Apart from these two Malaysians, the high commission said that there’s a possibility that there are more unrecorded Malaysian citizens in Afghanistan. Following this, they have advised them to register with the high commission and subsequently recommended that they return and remain in Malaysia until the situation in Afghanistan improves.
Stranded Malaysians in Afghanistan could reach out to them via email at mwdelhi@kln.gov.my or call at +911124159300. The location would be at 50-M, Satya Marg, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, India.
