With more than a month to go for the Mid-Autumn Festival, it’s quite evident that many would be searching for the best mooncake deals just in time for it. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Before getting into all the mooncake madness, let’s take a trip down history to get a glimpse of the origins of the festival itself. This festival which would be on the 21st September this year, is a traditional festival celebrated by many East and Southeast Asian people with a history dating back 3,000 years ago when China’s emperors worshipped the moon for bountiful harvests. On the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar, the Chinese believe that the moon would be at its brightest and fullest size, coinciding with harvest time in the middle of Autumn. Apart from lanterns with diverse shapes and sizes illuminating houses and shops, eating mooncakes is another highlight of this festival.

Well, what is a mooncake? These round or sometimes, square pastries, measure about 10cm in diameter and is filled with a rich thick filling traditionally made from red bean paste or lotus seed paste. Some mooncakes contain yolks from salted duck eggs and are cut and eaten in small wedges. The roundness of the mooncakes symbolises completeness and togetherness similarly to a full moon, which signifies prosperity and reunion for the whole family.

In recent times, the fillings of the mooncakes have been modified for a more contemporary feeling. In Malaysia, especially, mooncakes have taken a newer form due to the amalgamation of cultures resulting in the fillings being more suited to the taste buds of Malaysians, in general. These new fillings include, chocolate peanut butter, dried shrimp, pandan, green tea, ginger and even cheese!

With the pandemic, the joy of mooncake shopping has definitely been dampened due to the strict SOPs in place.
