Couple Angers Chinese Netizens By Holding Japanese Wedding In Shanghai

Although the world has become accustomed to sharing cultures and traditions, there are still arguments about what’s appropriate. It doesn’t help when these cultures clash with one another, causing upset among netizens.

Recently, a newly wed couple held a traditional Japanese wedding in Shanghai, China. Their unusual wedding ceremony caused arguments among netizens. Some argued that the couple was not patriotic and that their wedding was an insult to China.

The couple first posted a video of their Japanese wedding on social media. It quickly attracted the attention of netizens after they discovered it was not held in Japan, but Shanghai. The video showed the couple wearing traditional Japanese wedding outfits with their guests dressed in kimonos. The solemn event received many complaints from netizens. They were unhappy that the Chinese-looking couple held a Japanese wedding in China. Some commented that they should have held their wedding in Japan instead. Others made fun of the bride’s outfit, saying it looked similar to the Chinese mourning dress.

The bride refused to stay silent and rebuked them in the comments. “First of all, I am not Chinese,” she said. “Secondly, I like Japanese culture. Third, it doesn’t matter what you wear.” She made it clear that as it was her wedding, she could decide how she wanted to have it. “I spent my own money to (have) my favourite wedding. Why should I have gotten your advice?” she asked sarcastically. Her comments enraged netizens and confused others.

Her best friend stepped in to further clarify the matter. “The bride is not Chinese, but British,” she explained. Apparently, the bride, although of Chinese descendant, is now a British citizen. She also stated that they held the wedding in Shanghai as it was too troublesome to have it in Japan now. Netizens remarked that she wrote fluently in Chinese for a ‘British citizen’. “Don’t treat yourself as a Chinese if you became a British citizen. Please use your own native language instead of Chinese,” they retorted.

Although weddings are supposed to be happy occasions, it seems the bride’s wedding may have accidentally trodden on a few toes. However, she seems happy and proud of her ceremony. She may have been heavily criticised by netizens, but at least her wedding ceremony was as she wanted.
