YB Khairy Jamaluddin made history this week by becoming the first Malaysian to receive the Sinovac anti-Covid-19 vaccine on Thursday (18th March).

One thing that caught the public’s attention, though, would be Khairy’s reaction half an hour after taking the jab. The Minister of Science, Technology and Information jokingly remarked that he has also improved his fluency in Mandarin!

During a press conference held at the Rembau Hospital, KJ kicked off the event by speaking in Mandarin, prior to explaining the meaning. “I mentioned earlier that I have received the Sinovac vaccine and my Mandarin is now suddenly very fluent,” the politician commented.

KJ also shared a 24-second clip on his social media, addressing members of the public following the vaccination. “I feel good. No matter what type of vaccine it is, it is safe. Let us defeat the virus together. Protect yourself, protect everyone,” he wrote on the post.

When asked on why he chose the Sinovac vaccine over the Pfizer BioNTech, the 45-year-old clarified that he wanted to show Malaysians that the vaccine is also safe and effective. According to him, “I chose Sinovac because my other friends are taking the latter one. A lot of Malaysians said the vaccine is safe, but they’re not really sure about other vaccines.”

“So, I said ‘Okay, I’ll take this vaccine (Sinovac) so that they can see the minister in charge of coordinating the national immunisation program is also getting vaccinated,” the Rembau Member of Parliament was quoted as saying. For those interested, feel free to watch the full session here:

Hopefully, KJ’s effort will help in encouraging more people to get vaccinated, so that we can finally get rid of the Covid-19 virus once and for all.
