Many industries across the board have been suffering due to the Covid-19 pandemic and extended movement control order (MCO). Sitting at the top of the list are the hotel industry and tourism.
A survey by the Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) reveal that 15% of hotels in Malaysia may be closing down for good. While some hotel operators shared that they will remain close till year end, others may only resume businesses once a vaccine is found.
In the meantime, here’s a list of hotels that have been affected:
1. GTower Hotel, Kuala Lumpur
- Closed on: 30th April 2020
- 79 employees have been notified beforehand in accordance to their Employment Contract terms and will be paid their due salaries in accordance with the Employment Act.
2. Kinta Riverfront Hotel & Suites, Ipoh
- Closed on: 30th April 2020
3. Tower Regency Hotel
- Closed on: 30th April 2020
4. Jazz Hotel, Penang
- Closed on: 30th April 2020
- The 30-storey Jazz Hotel debuted last January and had 255 rooms with jazz-themed designs inspired by the 1920s and 1930s Jazz Age.
5. Penaga Hotel, Penang
- Closed on: 30th April 2020
6. Jerejak Island Resort, Penang
- Closed on: 30th April 2020
7. Ramada Plaza Melaka
- Closing on: 30th June 2020
- The 294-room 5-star hotel has served a 2-month termination notice to its affected employees.
8. Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan
- Closed on: 31st May 2020

11. Swiss-Inn Chinatown Kuala Lumpur

Other popular cafes (such as Hard Rock Cafe Kota Kinabalu) have also been a casualty of the ongoing Covid-19 nightmare. It’ll take awhile before the economy recovers.
