Universal Music Group is pushing the hip-hop music beyond the boundaries with the launch of Def Jam Southeast Asia.
In addition, Universal also spilled the good news of a number of rappers that are set to be a part of the journey – including our very own Joe Flizzow, DABOYWAY and Young Bong from Thailand, former Sleeq member Alif, Fariz Jabba and Yung Raja from Singapore, Alif as well as Indonesia’s A. Nayaka- to celebrate the unveiling of the music label.
The former Too Phat member shared his excitement with his fans in an interview with NST, “I’m truly honoured to be part of Def Jam South East Asia. After 20 years as an independent artiste, working my way up, I’ve finally joined the ‘big boys’ in a major music label. We’ve got a lot of work to do, and we’ll all do our best. And best of all, my fellow label artistes are all my old friends.”
The party continued to pump up with the all the performers coming together for a freestyle rapping session in front of selected audience consisted of urban cultural hall of famers as well as industry insiders. The event then continued with the performance of “Gangshit” by DABOYWAY.
For those uninitiated, Def Jam started as an underground label that focuses primarily on hip-hop genre inspired by the lifestyle sported at the streets of New York. For the past 35 years, Def Jam finally has found a spot in the music industry, with big names joining in the label – including LL Cool J, Ludacris, The Beastie Boys, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Kanye West and also Logic.
