Okay, that was fast. It hasn’t been a week since “Crazy Rich Asians” meets its worldwide audience, and now a sequel is already in the works!
The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Warner Bros. Pictures is already moving forward on a Crazy Rich Asians sequel which will be based on Kevin Kwan’s 2nd book, “China Rich Girlfriend”.
Director Jon M.Chu, as well as the creative team from the 1st movie including producers Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson and John Penotti, and also the screenwriters Peter Chiarelli and Adele Lim, will return to work on the sequel.
The follow-up film will introduce the character Charlie Wu (Harry Shum Jr.) and follow the development of his relationship with Astrid Leong (Gemma Chan). At the same time, the story will also follow Nick (Henry Golding) and Rachel (Constance Wu) to China on a search for her father.
“The idea is to tell the story in the next movie, I made a promise to Harry, so I’m going to do it,” Jon M.Chu told THR.
Warner Bros. has the rights to author Kevin Kwan’s entire trilogy so it is likely that “Crazy Rich Asians” will also have a 3rd sequel. “We have a plan with Kevin for the next two films,” says producer Simpson. The 3rd book is titled “Rich People Problems”.
