In recent years, Disney has launched a series of beloved live-action remakes (namely “Beauty and the Beast”, “The Jungle Book”, “Maleficent”) that were not only critically-acclaimed but also financially successful at the box office.
Last year, Disney confirmed that they were forging ahead with a spin-off of “101 Dalmations”. The upcoming film is currently in pre-production. Not much has been unveiled about this particular spin-off, but we’ve compiled a list of things we know about the much-loved tale.
1. The reboot is titled “Cruella” but what is it about?
We’ve seen Glenn Close portrayed the pup-hating criminal mastermind back in 1996, but “Cruella” is an origin story that will delve into Ms. De Vil’s younger years. That is before she became an evil old lady who likes to skin puppies in order to wear as a fur coat. It is safe to assume that “Cruella” will be similar to Angelina Jolie’s portrayal in “Maleficent”.
2. Emma Stone is set to star as the titular character
Why settle as a Disney princess when you can play an iconic Disney villainess right? Emma Stone has been confirmed to play the main role in “Cruella”. Here’s to hoping the 29-year-old Oscar-winning actress will look chic in monochrome…
No other cast members has been announced so far.
3. “Cruella” might take place in the late 1970s
According to Omega Underground, “Cruella” may take place in London during the year 1979. At that time, the punk-scene had pretty much exploded, so it’ll be pretty interesting to see how the young Cruella de Vil navigates the fashion scene during that time period. Having said that, this is all speculation for the time being.
4. Alex Timbers will be directing the movie
Alex Timbers is expected to helm the villain-centric film. Known for his Golden Globe win for creating Amazon’s “Mozart in the Jungle”, Timbers also has two Tony Award nominations. Thanks to his experience in music and featured film, rest assured that “Cruella” is in good hands.
Update: Latest reports claim that “I, Tonya” director Craig Gillespie is currently in talks to helm “Cruella” for Disney.
5. When will it debut in cinemas?
It was originally rumoured to arrive in theatres last Christmas. Disney has yet to reveal a released date for “Cruella”, but it is believed that audiences will get to watch Ms. de Vil’s origin story sometime in 2020.
