To quote MTV, the old Taylor Swift wasn’t the only popular figure that died this year. We also said goodbye to many Hollywood couples who decided to part ways.
As we approach the end of 2017, here’s a look back at the shocking and sad celebrity splits. It’s crushing to think that their love is now buried six feet under (may it rest in peace). Fingers crossed, we won’t have to mourn anymore broken relationships from high-profile couples.
1. Jennifer Lawrence and Darren Aronofsky
Oh mother! Since dating in October last year, JLaw and the “Mother” director Darren Aronofsky kept their relationship relatively private (until they were spotted making out in public). “Dating the director was different because, it’s like, we’d be on the tour together (and) I’d come back to the hotel and the last thing I want to talk about or think about is a movie. He comes back from the tour and that’s all he wants to talk about,” the Oscar-winning actress recently said, before splitting in November.
2. Chris Pratt and Anna Faris
This was perhaps one of the most shocking splits this year. After 8 years of marriage, Chris Pratt and Anna Faris announced in August that they were legally separating. “We tried really hard for a long time, and we’re really disappointed. Our son has two parents who love him very much and for his sake we want to keep the situation as private as possible moving forward. We still love each other and will always cherish our time together,” reads their joint statement. They have a 5-year-old boy named Jack.
3. Chris Evans and Jenny Slate
Chris Evans and Jenny Slate first fell in love when they met on the set of their family drama, “Gifted”. The couple called it quits in February after dating for almost one year. Despite that, the former flames remain close friends and have been seen conversing on Twitter in recent months. We bet many women are asking, “what is it like to date Captain America?”
4. Scarlett Johansson and Romain Dauriac
Fellow “Avengers” star, Scarlett Johansson’s happily ever after with her French journalist husband, Romain Dauriac, also didn’t pan out. Before their divorce was finalised in September, the 32-year-old actress was already dating “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) writer Colin Jost. Johansson and Dauriac have a daughter named Rose.
5. Selena Gomez and The Weeknd
Selena Gomez and The Weeknd (real name Abel Tesfaye) became Instagram official in January not long after they were photographed getting hot and heavy outside a Giorgio Baldi restaurant, in Santa Monica, California. Not long after announcing that she went through a secret kidney transplant, the “Fetish” songstress and the “Star Boy” crooner broke up in October.
Gomez recently rekindled her romance with Justin Bieber. Jelena is alive once more!
6. Demi Lovato and Guilherme “Bomba” Vasconcelos
After dating off and on since early January, Demi Lovato reportedly broke up with the MMA fighter in May. According to insiders, it wasn’t a dramatic split and the romance simply ran its course. The power vocalist has since deleted all photos with Guilherme Vasconcelos from her social media.
7. Hayley Williams and Chad Gilbert
After 16 months of being married together, Hayley Williams and Chad Gilbert have decided to go their separate ways. The 28-year-old Paramore singer and the 36-year-old New Found Glory guitarist released an emotional joint post on their respective Instagram accounts.
8. Janet Jackson and Wissam Al Mana
Despite welcoming their first child Eissa into world, Janet Jackson and her billionaire husband Wissam Al Mana ended their 5 years of marriage just three months after his birth. Close friends claim that their marriage had been on the rocks for sometime. It is believed that Al Mana had been abusive towards Jackson and she couldn’t take it anymore.
9. Jennifer Hudson and David Otunga
Speaking of abusive, Jennifer Hudson “requested and received a protective order against her ex-fiancé (David Otunga)” in “the best interest of their son (David Jr., 8)”. After spending 10 years together, it’s heartbreaking that the situation between the former flames ended so messy.
10. Mel B and Stephen Belafonte
Similarly, Melanie “Mel B” Brown and Stephen Belafonte’s separation was also an ugly affair. Some of the disturbing allegations claim that Belafonte had not only got their nanny pregnant and used Mel B’s money to get an abortion, but he also demanded to have threesomes with random women.
According to reports last month, the duo finally agreed to struck a deal to settle their lengthy and bitter divorce battle.
11. Fergie and Josh Duhamel
Fairytales don’t always have a happy ending, do they? On 14th September, Fergie and Josh Duhamel announced their shocking split after 8 years of marriage. Fergie, 42, and Duhamel, 44, who got married in Malibu in January 2009 after dating for 5 years, are parents to a 4-year-old son named Axl Jack. Although they are no longer together, the parents are still amicably co-parenting their little guy.
12. Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom
Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom first caught everyone’s attention when they were spotted vacationing together in Hawaii. Many even joked that the pop star’s single “Rise” was inspired by Bloom’s naked photos. Sadly, the beautiful couple called it quits at the end of February. However, they were seen cuddling at Ed Sheeran’s concert 4 months ago.
13. Robert Pattinson and FKA Twigs
Robert Pattinson and FKA Twigs first became an item in September 2014. It didn’t take long before the British actor and the indie singer got engaged in April 2015. It’s really a shame because news broke that the pair called off their engagement in October although sources claim they had broken up “several months ago”.
14. Paul Wesley and Phoebe Tonkin
Are couples destined not remain together in “The Vampire Diaries”? Many of us were disappointed that “Delena” didn’t work out. So when it was reported that another of our favourite couple, Paul Wesley and Phoebe Tonkin, had ran its course, we were devastated. Although the former flames have stayed mum about their private lives throughout their 4-year relationship, Wesley and Tonkin have never been shy about sharing lovey-dovey snapshots of each other on their Instagram accounts.
15. Claire Holt and Matthew Kaplan
Relationships are really fragile in Hollywood aren’t they? The day before their one-year wedding anniversary, Claire Holt and Matthew Kaplan filed for divorce. Many of you may remember the 28-year-old Australian actress from playing Rebekah Mikaelson in “The Originals”. Holt, who took Kaplan’s last name, requested for her original surname to be restored.
16. Amy Schumer and Ben Hanisch
We couldn’t be happier for Amy Schumer when she revealed that her then-boyfriend, Ben Hanisch, is an eye candy. Since Schumer and the furniture designer split in May, the funny comedian has been linked with chef and “Beetlebung Farm Cookbook” author Chris Fischer.
17. Tyra Banks and Erik Asla
It wasn’t a total shocker when we found out that Tyra Banks was dating famous photographer Erik Asla. She’s a top model after all. But just when we were getting better acquainted with her baby daddy after they welcomed their son, York Banks Asla, the couple went separate ways. Having said that, Asla still uploads stunning photos of Banks on his Instagram account.
