It’s no secret that we Malaysians love our food. We’re so blessed with so many delicious options that Lonely Planet even listed Malaysia as one of the top 10 countries in the world for the best food experience.
The best thing about the Malaysian food culture is that we can literally go out at any time of the day or night and still have a good, satisfying meal. That bodes well for everyone, especially the night owls, especially the kaki minums who crave that one specific meal after hours of downing alcohol.
Based on our (informal) survey, here are a few things most Malaysians like to indulge it when the alcohol gets to their head:
- Mamak because nothing beats Maggi goreng pedas telur mata

Hitting the mamak in the wee hours of the morning seems to be the most popular choice amongst Malaysians, and we’re lucky to have 24-hour mamaks at almost every corner of the street. Very few things in life can surpass the feeling of taking a mouthful of spicy Maggi goreng (with telur mata) at 3 in the morning – it hits all the right places.
2. Nasi lemak because of the spicy kick

Something greasy, something spicy, and something filling – that makes nasi lemak the ultimate food for sobering up. The steamed rice, the spicy, delicious sambal, and crunchy anchovies all pack a punch and is just what we need to jolt back to life. Also, you now have the strength to pick up your phone and order an Uber.
3. Dim sum because my anaconda don’t want none unless you got buns

Some people prefer comfort food when they get intoxicated. There’s just something about hot, fluffy, buns with delicious fillings that hit the right spot and does the trick. Dim sum is also the healthier choice – although the options are full of carbs, they are definitely more diet-friendly compared to all the fried foods.
4. Lok-lok because it’s easy as one, two, three

One of the easiest and satisfying options – you can easily locate lok-lok trucks nearby clubbing and bar areas. After a long night of drinking, some of us like to seal the night with hot, sizzling meat braised in hot soup and a mix of sauces. It’s also great because whether you want chicken, beef, fish, pork, vegetables, you can get them all from one place. It’s so easy too; just pick, dip, wait, and devour!
5. Bak kut teh because it’s warm and soupy

This is perfect for those who want a hearty meal after drinking. What is better is than devouring layers of pork ribs cooked in broth, with some yam rice and char kwai on the side, in the company of your friends?
6. Ramly burger because, um, Malaysians

This one is a no-brainer; Ramly burgers are the very essence of being a Malaysian. There’s a reason why it’s so easy to find a Ramly burger stall in every corner. Probably the best street burger in the world (if we do say so ourselves), the flipping, the folding, the mix of sauces, all create a paradise in your mouth, and gives your stomach the ultimate satisfaction.
7. McDonald’s because greasy burgers (and air-conditioning) rock

Personally, I could never eat McDonald’s after drinking, it’s quite a heavy meal and it will keep me up all night (or morning, considering that it’s already 4am). However, I know a lot of people who crave for burgers and fries after drinking. Perhaps all the oil and grease do a good job in satiating their hunger pangs and helping them to sober up. Also, the air-conditioning is a plus since you’re probably sweating from rocking out on the dance floor.
