As if fans weren’t already excited enough about Hollywood stars appearing at this year’s AsiaPOP Comicon (APCC) Manila at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, Netflix came in with guns blazing.
Throughout the 3-day duration, Comicon goers were able to enjoy themselves at Netflix’s “immersive and interactive zones” at Hall N. From “Stranger Things” and “Death Note”, to “Orange Is The New Black” and “Riverdale”, we were thrilled to check out the recreations of sets from our beloved shows. The inclusion of Marvel’s “The Defenders” was also an added bonus, especially for couch potatoes who recently finished binge-watch the series.
1. “Stranger Things”
Greeting us at the start of the tour was Byer’s living room. We tried communicating with Will via the lights on the wall but to no avail. Maybe he couldn’t hear us? Anyway, we decided to take things into our own hands and enter the Upside Down ourselves. Guess who was the first person/thing we saw? The terrifying Demogorgon that was walking around aimlessly. Yikes! We hurried out of the hole in no time and exited into Hawkins Lab.
2. “Death Note”
Next up was the “Death Note” VR (virtual reality) experience. During the duration, we came face-to-face with legendary Shinigami Ryuk himself and had the opportunity to play a death god. How exciting! Once inside the VR world, we were given a Death Note and the power to ultimately save a person’s life or end it. However, choosing between life and death isn’t as easy as it sounds. The player will have to face the consequences of one’s actions. This zone was a personal favourite.

3. “Orange Is The New Black”
Committed any crimes lately? The “Orange Is The New Black” zone was the perfect place to unleash one’s inner criminal. There were even some on-hand staffs dressed as prisoners to help you get into your villainous character with make-up and eyeliner tutorials. Next up? Strike a badass pose for the camera for your mugshot.
4. “Riverdale”
Go back in time at Pops’ Chock’lit Shoppe. Compete with neon lights and ’50s diner look, fans of the mystery TV show had plenty of “Riverdale”-inspired moments. Besides giving out free milkshakes, fans also got to test their knowledge with the retro-styled trivia jukebox.
5. Marvel’s “The Defenders”
If you’ve been following “Daredevil”, “Jessica Jones”, “Luke Cage”, and “Iron Fist”, then the team gathering of these 4 heroes in Marvel’s “The Defenders” is something that shouldn’t be missed. Thanks to the hype surrounding this series that recently debuted on Netflix, we were excited to see this part of the Marvel Universe brought to life. With nods to the individual franchises, it felt like we were transported to a small combined world away from APCC.
Here’s a short clip (from Spot.ph) to give you a better perspective of what went on:
Special thanks and much love to the people at Netflix for having us!
