We were right about their codename all along!
On 6th July 2017, YG Entertainment’s massively popular monster rookies BLACKPINK guested on SBS Power FM’s “2 O’Clock Escape Cultwo Show” and revealed that their original group name was not BLACKPINK.
BLACKPINK (블랙핑크), a K-Pop idol girl group which consists of members Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo, and Rose, officially debuted back in August 2016, but fans have actually been waiting for years to meet the girls. Although news about their debut first surfaced in 2012, it was pushed back time and time again to make way for the others.
Back then, they weren’t called BLACKPINK.
The Cultwo DJs approached the topic during their show with BLACKPINK when they asked the girls about their group name. To which the girls replied, “Our ‘sajangnim’ (CEO Yang Hyun Suk) created the name for us. One of our tentatives names before our debut was PINK PUNK. He made the ‘pink’ part cooler and changed it to BLACKPINK instead.”
I guess we kinda knew it all along! But can you imagine BLACKPINK being called PINK PUNK instead now? We can’t.
Meanwhile, the group is currently heavily promoting their latest single, “As If It’s Your Last” (마지막처럼).
The music video gained more than 11 million views on YouTube within 17 hours after release, becoming the fastest music video to exceed 10 million views by a K-Pop group. It is also the 2nd most viewed online video in the first 24 hours by a Korean act (the 1st being Psy’s “Gentleman”), with more than 13.3 million views within 24 hours after release.
