“Business, sports, you name it. At the very top, it’s a man’s world.”
“Crazy, Stupid, Love” co-stars Steve Carell and Emma Stone team up for Fox Searchlight Pictures’ highly-anticipated feteare film “Battle of the Sexes”. Directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris with a screenplay by Simon Beaufoy, the film is loosely based on the epic match between legendary tennis players Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs in 1973.
Dubbed the “Battle of the Sexes”, the match became the most-watched televised sports event of all time and sparked a global conversation on gender equality. Trapped in the media glare, Billie Jean King (played by Emma Stone) and Bobby Riggs (played by Steve Carell) were on opposites sides of a binary argument, but off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles.
With a supportive husband urging her to fight the Establishment for equal pay, the fiercely private King was also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, while Riggs gambled his legacy and reputation in a bid to relive the glories of his past. Together, they served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis courts and animated the discussions between men and women in bedrooms and boardrooms around the world.
The trailer (above) opens with Riggs attending a support for gambling addiction. The next scene then shows Riggs calling King late at night to propose that they challenge each other. “Male chauvinist pig versus hairy-legged feminist – you’re still a feminist, right?” says Riggs to King. However, the clip doesn’t show Riggs’ match with Australian tennis player Margaret Court (played by Jessica McNamee), who is his first female opponent.
Slated for release on 22nd September 2017, “Battle of the Sexes” also stars Andrea Riseborough, Elisabeth Shue, Austin Stowell, and Sarah Silverman.
