X-Men fans, Fox has found its Wolfsbane and Magik!
Helmed by “The Fault in Our Stars” director Josh Boone, who co-wrote the script with Knate Gwaltney, “The New Mutants” will star Anya Taylor-Joy (of “Split” and “The Witch” fame) as Magik and “Game of Thrones” actress Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane.
Based on the 1982 Marvel comic created by Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod, the upcoming spin-off film focuses on a group of teenage mutant heroes-in-training. This includes Wolfsbane (the Scottish character with werewolf-like transformation abilities), Magik (the younger sister of Colossus), Dani Moonstar aka Mirage, Cannonball, Sunspot, and Warlock.
According to Entertainment Weekly, sources revealed that “The New Mutants” will have a “John Hughes meets Stephen King” vibe. It was also reported that the movie is expected to begin production in July.
In other news, Joy’s “Split” co-star James McAvoy will not be reprising his role as Professor X aka Charles Xavier. The Hollywood Reporter writer Borys Kit took to Twitter to break the news. He wrote, “On NEW MUTANTS: other rumored castings – James McAvoy as Prof X – not true. He is not in movie, per sources.”
Kit also revealed that actor Nat Wolf (of “Paper Towns” fame) will not be playing Cannonball aka Samuel Zachary Guthrie.
