Titled “After Laughter”, the album cover art is filled with colourful hand-drawn squiggles. The 12-track new album also marks the return of original member drummer Zac Farro, who quit the band with his guitarist brother Josh over creative differences.
“Following up our self-titled album didn’t seem like it was going to be an easy task and, unsurprisingly, it was not. The problem about comparing yourself to… yourself… is that even though it’s better than looking elsewhere, you’re still looking in the wrong direction,” reads the statement from Paramore.
“I didn’t even know if we were going to make another record. There was a moment when I didn’t even want it to happen. Then it was like, I want it to happen, but I don’t know how we’re going to do it,” lead singer Hayley Williams told The New York Times. Thankfully, they managed to figure it out.
Their lead single “Hard Times” is a bouncy pop rock tune that is reminiscent of the band’s previous hits – “Still Into You” and “Ain’t It Fun” – by incorporating the 80s new wave. Directed by Andrew Joffe, the music video features a ton of neon and pastel colour palette but the song lyrics do acknowledges the group’s history of turmoil.
