Lorde is finally back! Much to fans’ delight, the Kiwi songstress has dropped her new single, titled “Green Light” on Thursday (2nd March).
The track, which is co-produced by Jack Antonoff, is a much more upbeat number than her previous works. In a tweet, she said, “I am so proud of this song. it’s very different, and kinda unexpected. It’s complex and funny and sad and joyous and it’ll make you DANCE.”
Taken off her sophomore album “Melodrama”, Lorde told Apple Music that “Green Light” is inspired by her own personal heartbreak experience and it is not something she’s used to writing about.
She continued, “It was my first major heartbreak. And the song is really about those moments kind of immediately after your life changes and about all the silly little things that you gravitate towards. I say, ‘She thinks you love the beach, you’re such a liar.’ What the f–k, she thinks you like the beach?! You don’t like the beach! It’s those little stupid things. It sounds so happy and then the lyrics are so intense obviously. And I realised I was like, ‘how come this thing is coming out so joyous sounding?’ And I realised this is that drunk girl at the party dancing around crying about her ex-boyfriend who everyone thinks is a mess. That’s her tonight and tomorrow she starts to rebuild. And that’s the song for me.”
The music video starts off with Lorde singing in front of a mirror, all dressed in a vibrant purple dress. The singer can then be seen trying to overcome her heartbreak by doing various acts such as going to the club, dancing on top of a car, and sticking her head out of the window of a car.
Moreover, The Bleachers frontman also makes a cameo appearance in the clip.
