Uh oh, it looks like Shakira has landed herself in hot waters.
Since releasing her music video “Chantaje”, fans of Rihanna (who call themselves Navy) have come forth and accused the Colombian singer of plagiarism after noticing several obvious similarities between her latest release and Rihanna’s “What’s My Name”.
The side by side comparison above was uploaded on the Rihanna Colombia Facebook fan page account. Shakira’s “Chantaje” opens with her walking flirtatiously into a convenience store and sees Maluma leaning towards the counter. Upon locking eyes, the Colombian rapper starts to follow Shakira around the store. After cornering her against a refrigerator, the couple starts to get physical.
Similarly in the “What’s My Name” visual, Drake is seen settling his bills at the counter inside a convenient store when he spots a red-haired beauty walking in. Smitten by Rihanna, the hip hop artiste musters up the courage and approach her. It doesn’t take long for the duo to get romantic while standing by a refrigerator.
Here are the respective music videos for you to judge for yourselves:
From what we can see, the similarities are only in the first 30 seconds of “Chantaje”.
So what do y’all think? Are the comparisons absurd or are they too similar to ignore?
