The performances of YG Entertainment artistes have most of the time, if not always, been the highlight of the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA).
In the past years, BIGBANG, Psy, Epik High, Lee Hi, WINNER, iKON, 2NE1, and more have hyped up the audiences so much that at times, it felt like we were watching a YG Family concert. Sadly, this year, none of the groups will be attending the 2016 MAMA.
This was confirmed by a source from YG Entertainment earlier today (Tuesday, 22nd November). In speaking to Star News, the source revealed, “The final decision has been made that YG singers will not be participating in the 2016 MAMA at AsiaWorld-Expo at 2nd December in Hong Kong.”
The decision was made as many of the groups have conflicting schedules, and therefore, it will be near to impossible for them to squeeze in and prepare a performance for MAMA.“‘MAMA’ opened up online voting on December 1, and we don’t know if there’s the possibility of winning an award yet. However, even if we do get invited, it’s been decided that it would be impossible to prepare a performance for the award show,” the rep said.
Hoping that there won’t be any speculations or misunderstandings, the source emphasized that YG’s absence was not caused by any conflict and they have informed Mnet about the decision.
YG Entertainment artistes and groups who promoted actively this year include Sechs Kies, BIGBANG, Akdong Musician, BLACKPINK, WINNER, iKON, MOBB, CL, and Lee Hi.
Several of them have been nominated in the awards, such as BLACKPINK for “Best New Female Singer” and “Best Music Video”; Psy for “Best Male Singer”; Lee Hi for “Best Female Singer”; MOBB for “Best Collaboration”; BLACKPINK, iKON, Psy, and Lee Hi for “Artiste Of The Year”; and MOBB for “Song Of The Year”.
