Usually sold by ice cream vendors on motorcycles, roti ais krim aka ice cream sandwich is a well-loved, common street food in Malaysia and Singapore. Upon hearing the tunes of Paddle Pop, kids would beg their parents to buy them some icy desserts (especially roti ais krim) from the “ice cream uncle”.
Though ice cream sandwiches vary from country to country, we take our version of the dessert very, very seriously. Previously, a BuzzFeed listicle angered many Singaporean and Malaysian readers by slamming the combination of bread and ice cream.
Over the years, ice cream sandwiches in the country have evolved and matured. From replacing sandwich buns with cookies to adding fun toppings such as flower petals, there are actually some pretty good ice cream sandwiches around town.
Though we’ll always have a soft spot for the classic, here are some must-try craft ice cream sandwiches in the Klang Valley:
1. Crispy Profiteroles with Salted Caramel Coffee Ice Cream @ Foo Foo Fine Desserts
Foo Foo Fine Desserts is founded by pastry chef Foo, who is an alumnus of Le Cordon Bleu Sydney, and his partners. Known for its wide range of exquisite sweets, the cafe is the perfect sweet tooth hideout. The shop’s crispy profiteroles with salted caramel coffee ice cream takes the form of an ice cream sandwich and it tastes as delicate as it looks. The strong ice cream goes well with the pastry balls and the slightly bitter-tangy aftertaste of the sliced orange gives the whole dish a unique twist.
The shop is snuggled on the first floor of a undistinguished building along Jalan Burhanuddin Helmi so keep a lookout for it when you’re going there.
Foo Foo Fine Desserts is located at 64A, First Floor, Jalan Burhanuddin Helmi, Taman Tun Dr. Ismail.
For more information, visit Foo Foo Fine Deserts’ Facebook page.
2. Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich @ IDC Cafe
IDC stands for Ice Dreams Cafe and it is also an acronym for ice cream, dessert, and coffee. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to guess the shop’s specialties, right?
Inspired by New Zealand dairy company Kapiti, IDC’s ice cream ranges from classic vanilla to Asian influenced lemongrass and ginger. While the cafe’s signature desserts are their unique variety of affogato creations, their ice cream cookie sandwiches are also worth a try. Nothing can go wrong with a huge dollop of cold, rich ice cream sandwiched between 2 chewy cookies. If you’re at loss, we suggest that you try some of their crowd favourites – Black Doris plum and crème fraiche, earl grey, and spicy apple crumble.
IDC is located at 30 Jalan SS 20/10, Petaling Jaya.
For more information, visit IDC’s Facebook page.
3. Croissant Ice Cream Sandwich @ Le Pont Boulangerie
Le Pont (which means the bridge in French) is a 3-level European inspired bakery and cafe that is worth more than one visit. With bread as its main forte, their croissants are flakey, buttery, and fragrant – perfect for pairing with ice cream!
Served with 3 scoops of delicious ice cream (chocolate, vanilla, and pistachio), fresh whipped cream, and crunchy crystallised pistachio, Le Pont’s croissant ice cream sandwich is your modern day roti ais krim and it is the shiznit.
Le Pont is located at 6, Lorong 1/137c, Batu 5, Jalan Kelang Lama, 58000 Kuala Lumpur.

4. Ice Cream Sandwich Platter @ Thirdwave
What can we say, Thirdwave’s ice cream platter is everything you’ve ever dreamed of.
The platter features 4 very different flavours: pandan kaya and burnt caramel ice cream in matcha sable; banana and praline ice cream with biscoff crumbs in charcoal sable; lavender honey and blueberry ice cream in lemon sable; and dark chocolate and rose ice cream with chocolate sable. Also, you can choose to order only a single serving.
Personally, we favour the dark chocolate and rose over the others. Don’t forget to wash it all down with a cup of the cafe’s signature cold brew coffee.
Thirdwave is located at 1-11, Level 1, Nexus, Bangsar South, Kuala Lumpur.
