This is real scary!
We just heard that 2 explosions went off in Mid Valley Megamall earlier this morning (Tuesday, 5th April). The explosions in question took place at 2 popular eateries: the Chili’s restaurant and McDonalds.
No lives were lost but according to The Star, 8 people were injured when the roof of the the restaurant collapsed after a gas explosion occurred at approximately 10am. Witnesses present at that the time said the mall was immediately evacuated following the explosion.
The City Fire and Rescue Department are currently at the scene to assess the situation. “Investigations are underway to determine if the ceiling collapse was caused by gas cylinders explosions,” said a Fire and Rescue department spokesperson.
Mid Valley Megamall is working with the authorities and has shut all gas systems while the investigation is being carried out.
The mall’s management has since released a statement:
“We regret to inform that we had an accident at Mid Valley Megamall at approximately 9.45am this morning. During the re-instalment work to our liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) system after maintenance works, we had minor explosions at two food and beverage outlets.
There were minor injuries to our maintenance staff, LPG contractor and tenant staff. Medical treatment is already being given. There were no fatalities, neither where there any injuries to the public.
We are working with the relevant authorities and have shut all the gas systems in Mid Valley Megamall until further notice. The mall will remain open to visitors and we will keep you updated as and when we have more information.
Safety remains our utmost priority and will focus our attention on the well-being of our tenants and guests. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
