Long before the evil Queen Ravenna met Snow White, she met Eric, one of the deadly huntsmen recruited by her sister Queen Freya.
Through “The Huntsman: Winter’s War”, Universal Pictures will reveal how the evil queen and the huntsman first met each other in the past.
Rather than being a sequel, “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” is actually a prequel to 2012’s “Snow White and the Huntsman” and it centres on the fates of the Huntsman (played by Chris Hemsworth) and Queen Ravenna (played by Charlize Theron) before they met Snow White.
“Twilight” star Kristen Stewart did not return to reprise her role as Snow White, but the film is joined by several new cast members including Jessica Chastain and Emily Blunt. Chastain is playing a warrior named Sara while Blunt plays Ravenna’s sister Freya aka the Ice Queen.
Ahead of the trailer release, Universal Pictures debuted a total of 4 character posters:
Produced by Joe Roth (of “Maleficent” and “Alice in Wonderland” fame), “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” is directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan based on a script by Frank Darabont, Craig Mazin and Evan Spilliotopoulo.
The story expands “the fantastical world of Snow White and the Huntsman” to unveil “how the fates of The Huntsman Eric and Queen Ravenna are deeply and dangerously intertwined”.
The full synopsis is aso follows:
Long before the evil Queen Ravenna was thought vanquished by Snow White’s blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya, suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom.
With Freya’s ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen—including Eric and warrior Sara — only to find that her prized 2 defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love. When Freya learns of her sister’s demise, she summons her remaining soldiers to bring the Magic Mirror home to the only sorceress left who can harness its power.

But once she discovers Ravenna can be resurrected from its golden depths, the wicked sisters threaten this enchanted land with twice the darkest force it’s ever seen. Now, their amassing army shall prove undefeatable…unless the banished huntsmen who broke their queen’s cardinal rule can fight their way back to one another.

UPDATE (19th November, 6:43am):
“Mirror Mirror on the wall, who is the most powerful of them all?”
The first full trailer for “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” has arrived online, giving us an idea of how the events in first film has led to this gritty fairy tale.
But as seen in the trailer, this film has nothing to do with Snow White. The trailer only offers a glimpse at how Queen Ravenna’s younger sister Freya trained children into her huntsmen and how Hemsworth’s character ended up losing her lover in the “Snow White” arc. In fact, it seems like the evil queen has been brought back from the dead by her sister in this film.
