#LucBesson: Sequels For “Lucy” & “Colombiana” Are In The Works

Not one to shy away from sequels or franchises, Luc Besson has directed a number of action movies that went on to spawn multiple sequels. From “Taxi” to “Taken” to “The Transporter”, Besson sure knows how to maintain a story’s continuity with his frequent screenwriting collaborator Robert Mark Kamen.

Although his 2014 film “Lucy” ended in an anti-climatic way, this female-led box office success is reportedly getting a sequel.

Scarlett Johansson LUCY

Starring Scarlett Johansson, “Lucy” centres on the title character who is tricked into working as a drug mule by her new boyfriend. She is forced to deliver some highly valuable synthetic drug called CPH4 to a Korean mob boss and drug lord, but ended up gaining psychokinetic abilities when some of the drugs she was carrying started to leak into her bloodstream. She is granted with telekinetic powers, the ability to absorb intelligence instantly, and the ability to not feel pain or other discomforts.

However, the ending left no room for sequel, with Besson himself admitting to the Taiwanese press last summer that “Lucy 2” will not happen. He said, “I don’t see how we can do (a sequel). It’s not made for that. If I find something good enough, maybe I will, but for now I don’t even think about it“.

Well, we don’t see how a sequel is impossible, especially since this action movie grossed over $458 million worldwide on a budget of $40 million.

And it seems like Besson himself is changing his mind too. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it was revealed during a presentation at French film trade expo CineEurope that Besson’s production company EuropaCorp is planning to develop a sequel to “Lucy”

“Jurassic World: Rebirth” Review: A Fun, Edge-Of-Your-Seat Return To The Good Ol' OG

With that vague and mind-boggling ending, it is definitely difficult to predict how the story will go from there. But if Besson could somehow crack a story that would maintain the story’s continuity, then we are certain that Johansson will return to reprise her role.

Colombiana

On a separate note, the studio revealed at CineEurope that a sequel of 2011’s “Colombiana” is also in development. The film, which starred Zoe Saldana in the leading role, grossed $60 million worldwide on a $40 million budget. Though it scored poor reviews, a sequel could work as Saldana will be seen next in “Star Trek 3” and the sequels to James Cameron’s “Avatar“.

The current EuropaCorp roster features a number of action films including:

  • “Transporter Refueled” (“Transporter” prequel) – 14th September 2015
  • “Shut In” (starring Naomi Watts) – February 2016
  • “Nine Lives” (starring Kevin Spacey) – 29th April 2016
  • “The Lake” – July 2016
  • “Valerian” (starring Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne) – 2017

So, are you excited about the sequels? Let us know in the comments box below.
