Pentatonix holds the perfect pitch.

Formed in 2011, Pentatonix comprises of 5 a capella vocalists; Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstie Maldonado, Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola. The a capella group originally from Arlington, Texas, have won over fans from across the globe with their covers of existing pop songs and original work.

Known for their musical arrangements, strong presence of low bass vocals, and incredible range of vocal percussions, Pentatonix’s Christmas album “That’s Christmas To Me” was certified platinum in USA in December 2014. The album also become the highest-charting holiday album by a group since 1962.

Currently gearing up for their first ever show here in Kuala Lumpur, we had a quick chat with Mitch of Pentatonix to get to know the group a little better.

Having come a long way from when you first started in 2011, how different would you say Pentatonix is now from back then?

We’ve changed pretty drastically, actually. Our musical style has matured and become less about “special effects”. We’ve matured as musicians and as a musical entity. We’ve also really come into our own, as individuals. I think we’re starting to get to know ourselves a lot better. And each other!

Has your chemistry changed in the past few years?

Most definitely. We’ve become more of a work force. We still love and support each other like a family, but our work ethic has grown stronger over the years.

What can fans expect from your show here in Malaysia?

An incredibly fun experience! We love performing for our fans. It’s also a bit interactive, which I think the fans are going to enjoy.

What is the one song that never fails to drive the crowd crazy?

I would say Daft Punk. It’s our most viral YouTube video, and one of my personal favorites.

What else is Pentatonix working on right now – more covers/ originals?

Mostly originals for our upcoming full length album. But we probably will never stop doing covers.

If you could work with a Top 40 artiste, who would it be?

I would love to work with Beyoncé. I think we could maybe do something throwback-y.

What else is in the pipeline for Pentatonix this 2015?

Well, aside from the months of touring alongside Kelly Clarkson, we’re working on our first full length album. And more YouTube videos as well. We’re all really stoked, and we hope the fans are, too.

Pentatonix will be making their way to Kuala Lumpur for a one-night only concert on 30th May. Concert and ticketing details here. Big thanks to our buddies at Sony Music Malaysia for giving us this interview opportunity.

We leave you today with “Mary, Did You Know?” by Pentatonix. Enjoy!
