Earlier in September, Deadline wrote that there’s a high chance of titular agent Jason Bourne making a return to the silver screen. To be more precise, Matt Damon as Jason Bourne. At that time, it was rumoured that Universal Pictures had begun making deals with Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass to reunite for a fifth instalment to the Bourne saga. However, Universal would not comment nor would the reps.
However, at an event last week, Matt Damon himself confirmed that he’ll reprise the role of Jason Bourne in in 2016. Speaking to E! News at a party for Project Greenlight, he stated that he’ll be reuniting with director Paul Greengrass for the project, with the film hitting theatres the following year!
The actor specifically said, to the actor, “Yes, next year. It’ll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. (Director) Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that’s all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes.”
Echoing Matt Damon’s sentiment, one will have to recall that after 2007’s “The Bourne Ultimatum”, the third in the series overall, Greengrass walked away from the franchise. This is because with Bourne’s quest to regain his memories complete, the director felt that the character was at a creative dead end. 2012’s “The Bourne Legacy” starred “The Avengers” star Jeremy Renner in an entirely different role. Sadly, “The Bourne Legacy” was met with a lukewarm critical reception.
As of now, it’s still unclear what new adventures Bourne has ahead of him, but fans can now fully expect a continuation to his story. But, to quote Matt Damon, the next Bourne movie is slated to be released in 2016.
Who’s excited? :)
