How old were you when you first started performing?
I was really young. I have always loved singing and I started when I was in Kindergarten so I would say I was about four or five years old when I first started performing.
Who were your major influences growing up?
It’s simple really. My parents always had music playing. It was either music playing on the player, my dad singing or my dad preparing for his show. I grew up with music.
What kind of music did you listen to growing up?
Well I listened to a lot of Rock and Roll with my dad and I loved it. I also got into the whole MTV scene as I grew older and was listening to boy bands and teen pop, because let’s face it – I grew up in the era where boy bands and teen pop were huge!
You grew up listening to Rock and Roll and teen pop. What made you choose to perform Jazz numbers?
Everything about Jazz is so beautiful, from the lyrics to the tune and sound of it – it’s simply beautful and I love how it feels. It’s so raw and pure that it reminds you of the origins of music with it’s powerful lyrics.
How old were you when you wrote your first song?
I was nineteen when I wrote my first song. It is a song about bad timing with relationships, which is honestly something I always seem to be experiencing. Haha !
Are your songs usually based on personal experiences?
I would say that it is. But I don’t just write about my own experiences. I see what people go through, friends and family. They are what my songs are based on – their experiences.
How important are lyrics to you?
VERY! Lyrics are very, very important to me! I love lyrics and it’s the first thing I listen for in a song. It is also the only thing that can keep a song replaying itself in my head for days.
Who is your favourite songwriter?
John Mayer. He harmonises and links his lyrics to his melody so beautifully and I truly admire that.
What about your favourite Singer?
Oh it has to be Mrs. Carter, the one and only, Beyonce.
If you could collaborate with one artist, who would it be?
John Mayer. I love him. But to be honest, if I really could collaborate with one artist it would be Barbra Streisand.
What is your favourite thing about performing?
Everything. From walking up the stairs to the stage, to saying hello to the crowd, to singing the first song to finishing the last song with sweat running down my face! haha i love it all!
Where can our readers listen to you or watch you perform?
I am traveling a lot this year and next, the best way to catch me is by reading my blog.
