Just today, Bank Negara Malaysia announced the issuance of new Malaysian banknotes series into circulation from 16th July 2012 (Monday). The existing banknotes will remain as legal tender when that happens, of course.
The new banknotes, themed, “Distinctively Malaysia” draws its inspiration from the Malaysia’s diverse culture, heritage, and nature.
But aside from just looking and feeling pretty, it also comes with the latest banknote technology to enhance security features, including:

- Shadow image
- Clear window
- Watermark portrait (with pixel and highlighted numerals)
- Colour shifting security thread
- Micro lens thread
- Perfect see-through register
- Colour glossy patch
Even the visually impaired will be able to do transactions with the new banknotes without assistance by using the tactile identification feature, to identify and distinguish the different denominations.
The “Distinctively Malaysia” series comprises of the polymer substrate RM1 and RM5, RM10, the return of the RM20, and RM100. Members of the public will be able to obtain these new banknotes through their normal business transactions
