We’ve lost another legend. On Sunday (12th October), reports emerged that actress Diane Keaton had passed away at the age of 79. According to several sources, her health had reportedly declined over the past few months, and authorities received a call from her home on Saturday, after which she was taken to the hospital.
The cause of her death has yet to be disclosed. Since the news broke, many Hollywood celebrities, including her former co-stars, have taken to social media to pay tribute to the iconic actress and express their grief over losing a dear friend. Here are some of their heartfelt messages:
Bette Midler
Bette Midler and Diane Keaton starred together in the iconic 1996 comedy film “The First Wives Club”. The actress paid tribute to her late co-star on Instagram, writing, “I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me. She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star.”
Steve Martin
Actor Steve Martin was among the first to post a tribute on Twitter, sharing a simple caption that read: “Loved! La dee da, la dee da.” The two stars played husband and wife in the 1991 classic “Father of the Bride” and have maintained a close friendship ever since. Steve also shared on Instagram an old interview in which Diane jokingly called him an “idiot” when asked to choose between him and Martin Short.
Mandy Moore
Who can forget the ever-popular 2007 rom-com “Because I Said So”? The emotional, heartwarming scene between Mandy Moore and Diane Keaton is forever etched in our hearts. The actress paid tribute to her “mom” in an Instagram post, writing, “They say don’t meet your heroes, but I got to work with one of mine and even call her ‘mom’ for a few months. An honour of a lifetime. What an incandescent human Di is and was. I am so sad she’s gone for all the reasons but also because it felt like she’d be here forever, dazzling us with her talent and charm (and her style, c’mon)!!! One of the very best to ever do it.”
Goldie Hawn
Goldie Hawn, who was also in “The First Wives Club,” took to Instagram to pay tribute to her former co-star. “You never liked praise, so humble, but now you can’t tell me to ‘shut up’ honey. There was, and will be, no one like you. You stole the hearts of the world and shared your genius with millions, making films that made us laugh and cry in ways only you could,” she wrote in her lengthy, emotional post.
Viola Davis
Academy Award winner Viola Davis expressed her disbelief on Instagram after learning that Diane Keaton had passed away. The actress wrote: “No! No! No! God, not yet, no! Man… you defined womanhood. The pathos, humour, levity — your ever-present youthfulness and vulnerability — you tattooed your soul into every role, making it impossible to imagine anyone else inhabiting them.”
We would also like to extend our deepest condolences to Diane Keaton’s loved ones. May they find strength and comfort during this difficult time.
