Games & Grub: Not-So-Boring Board Game Cafes In KL & Selangor

What do you mean there’s absolutely nothing to do in Kuala Lumpur/Selangor on weekends? As it is, there are plenty of cute Korean cafes and pet-friendly cafes to cater to you and your furkid. Now, there are even cafes that allows patrons to sit, chat, and indulge in a couple of board/card games.

A word of warning too: You could easily get roped into spending an obscene amount of time at these places while trying to outdo your friends in a game of Scrabble.

Meeples European Boardgame Cafe, SS15 Subang Jaya

With over 400 selections including imported favourites, one can establish new colonies in Settlers of Catan or engage in battle in other kingdoms while secretly delighting in a frienemie’s glare. Lounge around decadent sofas as miniature slaves gather resources, build cities, and breakdance in the nude at your command, or use the free Wi-Fi to boast about victories in cyberspace and outer space. Throughout the session, patrons can order fizzies, frosties, or finger food such as french fries and calamari rings. There are even friendly game masters at the cafe that are always at hand to offer guidance on how to unbox a new game. Additional playtime may be purchased at RM5 per person per hour.

Meeples European Boardgame Cafe is located at 64-2 Jalan SS 15/4D, 47500 Subang Jaya, Selangor (Open Tuesdays – Sundays from 11am till 1am, closed on Mondays).

They’ve also recently opened a branch at 17-2, Jalan PJU 5/10, Dataran Sunway, 47810 Kota Damansara, Selangor, Malaysia (Open on all days from 6pm till 1am except for Tuesdays).

For more information, visit their Facebook page.

Boardgame Depot, Lucky Garden Bangsar

Boardgame Depot serves as a warm and homely hang out place for just about anybody. They offer and your friends a place to get together and play around with the range of board games that they have. Price? A thirfty RM3 per hour per head. You’re also allowed to purchase these games and rent English novels from the vast collection on our bookshelves. Of course, in addition to that, they have snacks and drinks to compliment your stay here. With over 300 unique Euro-Designer board games, 20,000+ English novels, a cafe that serves snacks and drinks, and high-speed Wi-Fi connection, this is an ideal place for friends and families to spend some quality time together!

La Bodega, Telawi Bangsar

We’ve previously featured La Bodega as one of our choice “solo dining” places in Malaysia but guess what? That’s not the only unique selling point that they possess! The La Bodega in Telawi offers a great menu spread of Spanish food such as the paella and a range of delicious tapas. But, its La Bodega Lounge (located upstairs), is really cosy and dotted with comfortable sofas, providing for a comfortable ambience through and through. Patrons may lounge around on weekends to gorge on their awesome all-day breakfast and sip on coffee or refreshing sangria while enjoying a selection of board games. The many board games, such as Scrabble (we love Scrabble!), are stacked on nearby shelves. Take your pick!

The Border City Cafe and Board Games

Eat. Drink. Play. But not necessarily in that order! The Border City Cafe and Board Games is a cafe that allows you to enjoy a cup of cafe latte as you unwind, and watch as the world go by outside the window. Kick back and stretch your legs out, and let our ambience turn your frowns upside down into smiles. Indulge your sweet tooth in our dessert menu, but remember to share with your friends. And if it’s some different kind of excitement that you crave, make a beeline for our shelves, and marvel at board games you never even imagine existed. Bring friends, grab a box, and sail into uncharted waters. With dozens of board games for you to choose from, it’s a magical world out there, so let’s go exploring!

All Aboard Community Gaming Centre

Located in the heart of Petaling Jaya, All Aboard Community Gaming Centre is a board game venue offering their platform for both board gamers and non-gamers alike to connect with a fun-filled interactive social activity. But unlike other board game cafes in KL/Selangor, they were founded based on a community gaming centre concept rather than just a cafe or just another shop that sells board games. Their services are also priced differently from the other board game centres because while other centres charge their customers based on time or the number of players, All Aboard charges a fixed price for the rental of each board game. Rates range from RM10 to RM50 per board game, depending on the tier the board game falls under, and hot drinks and snacks are available if gamers feel peckish during their gaming session!
