This coming school holiday, Malaysia’s premier water theme park Sunway Lagoon will be introducing a jaw-some new activity at its Scream Park which will literally make your “jaws” drop!

Get ready for a jawsome experience as Sunway Lagoon introduces the world’s first ever Sharknado movie walk through attraction known as the “Sharknado Alive!” based on the popular “Sharknado” franchise.

For those of you who have been living under the sea and have no clue what the infamous franchise is about, it is basically a series of disaster horror comedy science-fiction films which follows a pair of husband and wife who continuously encounters “sharknadoes” (tornadoes filled with sharks), everywhere they go.

The movie is known to be one of the classic examples of “so-bad-it’s-good” movie thanks to its intentional silly humour, absurd plot and nonsensical twists. The unexpected success of the first movie spawned many sequels, video games, comics and spin-offs, and also earning it a cult following!

So to celebrate this fin-tastic franchise, Hype Malaysia is collaborating with Sunway Lagoon to give out 20 pairs of entry ticket to the water park this August school holiday.

Here are some important things to note about the ticket:-

  • The validity of these tickets is from 10th to 18th August 2019.
  • Applicable for weekends and public holidays.
  • Applicable for all parks including all rides, activities and attractions, but not inclusive of pay-per-ride activities.
  • The contest will run from 22nd July until 28th July 2019.
  • Winners will need to collect the tickets at Hype’s office from between 29th July to 3rd August 2019.

Sharknado Alive! marks one of the most unique themed attraction at Scream Park. Among the highlights of this latest attraction is the interaction between visitors and a cast of live actors who play seasoned ‘weather girl’, ‘victims’ and of course, sharks!

Brace yourselves for a harrowing journey through a maze-like attraction that will feature sights and sounds of sharks in tornadoes.

The attraction occupies the entire top level of Scream Park and takes visitors through a 15-minute harrowing journey through locations based on some of the scenes from the movie.

Sharknado Alive! opens 10th August 2019 at Sunway Lagoon’s Scream Park. The opening hours will be from 11am to 6pm daily. Enjoy the latest shark-tastic adventure along with over 90 rides and attractions at Sunway Lagoon!

When you’re bursting with happiness, you just want to share it with the world – that’s exactly how Duncan James is feeling right now.

The singer from the boyband Blue took to social media over the weekend to officially announce that he’s in a relationship with a guy and is proud to be gay.

Presumably taken in Brussels, Belgium, the heartwarming snapshot shows the 41-year-old UK star getting cosy with his Brazilian beau Rodrigo Reis under the setting sun. “I didn’t identify as a gay man for many years because of my own issues with coming out, but finally I’m happy in my skin & this guy next 2 me makes me proud 2 be gay,” he tweeted.

James first revealed he was bisexual in 2009 after he and his Blue band members – Antony Costa, Lee Ryan and Simon Webbe – went on a hiatus. He later came out as gay in 2012.

Since his declaration of love for Reis, many fans have been pouring well-wishes. It is unclear when the couple started dating, but they were pictured together last month in Tropikali Festival.

The pop star who has been busy with the musical theatre “The Rocky Horror Show” as Frank-N-Furter previously shared how he opened up to bandmate Webbe. “When I told Simon, he encouraged me to speak to my mum, who was in LA with me in a hotel at the time,” he called.

The hunk added, “I raided my mini bar, drank a load of drinks, then knocked on her door. I was sobbing and I sat her down and said: ‘Remember my friend Pete? I’ve been in love with him. He’s been my secret boyfriend‘.”

His mum had the best response when she replied, “You’re gay? I thought you were going to say you had cancer.”’

It’s great that you can get married now, as a gay person. It’s wonderful that more and more countries are slowly opening up the doors for that to happen. Why can’t you marry someone that you love? Why should we be dictated to? You should be able to have that right, and I hope one day to be married,” the entertainer recently told The Culture Trip.

James also has a 14-year-old daughter called Tiane from a previous relationship.

Products localisation is actually quite common as it is one of the essential ways for international products or brands to appeal to the locals.

For example a lot of international fast food chains in Malaysia such as McDonald’s or KFC have rice in its menu – because Malaysians just love their rice.

But China’s KFC has taken their menu localisation to a whole new level with the introduction of Chinese street food items such as steamed skewers or as the Chinese calls it “chuan” (串) as well as hot pot – in Malaysia, we call it “lok-lok”.

According to Radii, the fast food chain plans to introduce more of these street food items to 10 major cities, including Shanghai, Chengdu, Chongqing and Harbin.

While it’s nice to see KFC China’s effort of trying to adapt to the local palette, some locals don’t really appreciate the sentiment.

Netizens have been debating about KFC’s decision since the news was announced, with many wondering why one would even eat these Chinese street food items in KFC when one can enjoy the real deal outside.

Some also compared the price between KFC’s street food which is 2 or 3 times more expensive than the real street food in China.

It is true that KFC can never capture the true experience of street food, but its attempt for the new menu is probably just a temporary marketing strategy to pull in more crowds.

In another similar news, KFC Hong Kong recently unveils spicy chicken mooncakes in its menu.

It’s been a difficult past week for Rihana Oksana as her very public divorce with Sultan Muhammad V made headlines nationwide.

Earlier this morning (Monday, 22nd July), the former Russian beauty queen took to Instagram to share an emotional post to thank her Malaysian supporters and also to announce that her son is 2 months old today.

A post shared by Rihana Oksana Petra (@rihanapetra) on

Clearly feeling overwhelmed, she wrote, “I am writing this post and I cannot back tears“. She clarifies that they are “tears of happiness and gratitude” from the support she has received from people.

In addressing Malaysians, she expressed:

You have big hearts, because you accepted … me – a girl who was born in a different country and grew up in a different culture. I am proud that Malaysian blood flows in the veins of my son and I will do everything for him to grow worthy of your love.”

Although the 27-year-old mum intentionally choose not to address her current relationship with the former Malaysian king, she admitted that she’s been the receiver of “a lot of malice, slander, and envy”.

But you convince me that there is still a lot of kindness left in the world. If I had the opportunity, I would embrace each of you with joy. I feel your support and it is very valuable for me,” Rihana continued.

Last Saturday (20th July), Sultan Muhammad V’s lawyer, Koh Tien Hua, confirmed his divorce by releasing the copy of the letter via the Singapore-based Eversheds Harry Elias LLP law firm.

In case you didn’t know, the triple talaq divorce (known as talaq baayin, or the irrevocable divorce) “is the most severe forms of divorce in Islam. It stipulates that the couple cannot remarry unless the woman marries another man, and this man, of his own free will, divorces her or dies”.

Rihana’s father recently opened up about her divorce, which you can read about it here.

From left to right (pictured above), here are the 5 main cast that showed yo at the San Diego Comic-Con: O-T Fagbenle, Florence Pugh, Scarlett Johansson, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbour.

Where we find Natasha in her life at this point is very specific,” Scarlett Johansson told EW. “She really is in a dark place where she’s got no one to call and nowhere to go. She’s really grappling with her own self. When something huge explodes and all the pieces are landing, you have that moment of stillness where you don’t know what to do next — that’s the moment that she’s in. In that moment, you actually have to face yourself.”

David Harbour on his character, Alexei: “That is his by-day name, but at night he becomes the rock star the Red Guardian. In the Cold War, the Americans were developing weaponry, and the Soviets were responding. The Americans developed Captain America, and the Soviets responded with something called the Red Guardian. In a way he’s a super-soldier, but he’s also a very complicated guy. He has a lot of flaws, a lot of idiosyncrasies. It’s a very rich character.”

Florence Pugh plays Yelena, who is Natasha’s “sister figure”.

Rachel Weisz plays Malena, who has “been cycled through the Black Widow Red Room (program) five times at this point in her life. She’s quite a seasoned spy and assassin (who is involved in a scientific experiment).”

O-T Fagbenle is Mason: “He’s the guy who can get things done if you’re a spy or superhero and you need a bit of extra help. It’s a bit of a complex relationship with Natasha because obviously, ostensibly we have this kind of business transaction, but I think there’s a little romantic frisson.”

“Black Widow” will debut on 1st May 2020.

Newly released Tamil thriller “Kadaram Kondan” has been officially banned in Malaysia due to the negative portrayal of the Malaysian police in the movie.

The movie’s distributor, Lotus Five Star (LFS), made a last-minute announcement on its social media, quoting that it is “as per the order of the Film Censorship Board (LPF) of Malaysia.”

Previously, it was speculated that the movie was banned due to its title which translates as “Kedah’s Conqueror” but LPF later denied the claims.

According to LPF’s chairman Mohd Zamberi Abdul Aziz, the movie was banned because the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) in the story have been portrayed in bad light.

“No. It is not because of the title, but the film has damaged the image of Malaysian police,” the chairman told Malaysia Kini.

“If it’s just a scene then we can just remove it, and approve the film. But the entire plot put our Malaysian police in bad light. If we cut all the scenes, then no one will be able to understand the story,” he added.

90 percent of the movie was shot in Malaysia, but it is also revealed that the filmmakers failed to get necessary permits to shoot some of the movie scenes in the country, which is considered as illegal.

The announcement has disappointed many Malaysian Tamil movie buffs who have mostly bombarded LFS’s social media account and taken to Twitter to call out the ban.

Earlier this year, another Tamil movie titled “Super Deluxe” was also banned in Malaysia due to religious content, causing dissatisfaction among Malaysians.

Directed by Rajesh M Selva, “Kadaram Kondan” is a remake of French film “Point Blank”, starring Vikram and Akshara Haasan as leading stars as well as Sarawak-born actress Jasmine Kaar, who made her Kollywood debut via this movie, playing the main antagonist.

It seems like it’s a good time to be the Japanese rock band, Alexandros. From being featured in the live-action of Bleach’s soundtrack to contributing songs to video games; the four-piece set has been on a steady rise since last year.

Stylized as [Alexandros] and sometimes ALXD, Yoohei, Hiroyuki, Masaki, and Satoyasu only visited us in 2018 for a taste of their grand debut in Malaysia but it seemed to not be enough. Bringing their latest tour to us, “Sleepless in Kuala Lumpur” was held in all its glory at Bentley Music Auditorium on the 19th of July 2019. The event was organized by Toybox Projects, who also brought the band to Malaysian fans the last time.

The opening act was none other than the electric FAZZ. Charming the audience with their unique sound and bold genre, the crowd was amped up from the energy. At 8:30pm, the lights went out and the screams turned feral. It was finally time. As the members slowly took their places on the stage, grabbed their instruments and waited for the cue, fans could barely contain themselves.

The first song was none other than the first song off their latest album, “Sleepless in Brooklyn”; “Last Minute”. It was an interesting choice to start with, considering its somewhat muted intro. The lights were still on, many fans were still stumbling into the venue as the song played. However, it appeared to be all according to plan as
Yoohei got everyone singing along, worked as the perfect charm to hype up the crowd to the loveable “Dracula La”. It was quickly followed by “Starrrrrrr”. Known for the emotional chords it strikes, the entire crowd came in full swing for the song, especially for the impressive guitar solo in it.

Rockers found a home in the space of Bentley’s auditorium, as the thumping music to “I Don’t Believe In You” ricocheted off the walls and into the hearts of everyone present.
Then came the first English song of the night, “Waitress Waitress” which got everyone clapping along to the familiar drum beat. Up next was the chaotic “Girl A”, complete with a long siren intro that kept everyone on their toes— literally—as fans were waiting to jump along to the iconic crash of instruments as the song began.

After all that energy it only seemed right to tone things down a little. “Party is Not Over” started playing, a new entry to their setlist as it is off their latest album. As fun as it was to party to previous singles, the song got everyone swivelling along to the toe-tapper. The performance included impromptu ad-libs from Yoohei, going in at full energy despite the mellow melody.

After that set, the band took a break. After a quick introduction, the band quickly clarified that their drummer, Satoyasu had to sit this tour out and they had a replacement drummer from BIG MAMA instead. Yoohei coyly asked the crowd if it was “Seronok tak?” (Are you having fun?), which had Malaysian fans whooping in response. With a smile, he told fans to do their own thing while the song is playing, even if they didn’t know the lyrics. “Just have fun,” he said before launching into the firecracker that is “Kaiju”.

It is impressive to note how the members barely took breaks, and yet managed to give their all for each set. Confidence was oozing second time around; these guys didn’t come to play. They were performers who had fun on stage, as it was enjoyable for both parties. This was evident from the smiles and small giggles that escaped their lips every now and then when they saw how the crowd went insane.

Yoohei even mentioned how the wanted to bring the Malaysian crowd back to Japan, to make them learn how to have fun at a concert. Considering the concert etiquette there, seeing how alive the crowd was here made the band feel all sorts of grateful. Masa greeted everyone hello in Chinese, which sent the crowd wild, considering how quiet he usually is. The charismatic Hiro even flexed his extensive Malay vocabulary, which consisted of only one word; “Minum” (to drink). He cheekily gestured by raising a bottle of mineral water before saying, “Cheers, guys,” and taking a swig.

Four songs came up next; two classics of “New Wall” and “Ashita Mata”, followed by two new entries, “Fish Tacos Party” and “Your Song”. With a gentle music box intro, “Your Song”, marked the beginning of slow songs after all the bangers. It filled the atmosphere with romance instead, complete with pink lighting.

As we reached the end of the night, Yoohei smiled fondly at the crowd. “Even though it’s only my second time, I feel like I live here. I wanna see you guys here next time, promise me!”

The romance of the air was maintained with the lovely “Adventure” but all wiped away when the beginning notes of “Arpeggio” started playing. Then the lights all went off, and the members whisked away backstage despite the groans of the audience.

Shouts of encore summoned the members of ALXD for one more go, where the band played their two latest singles; “Pray” and “Gesshoku Horizon”.

As the show simmered down to its final moments, Yoohei started getting somewhat deep with his words. Speaking about identity, staying true to yourself, and appreciating the present, he hoped that the music they create would be able to help fans cherish their lives more.

Live your life. And I can tell you right now… I’m enjoying mine.”

The final song of the night was “Wataridori”; the song that started it all. The first song released after their rebranding as Alexandros, it reverberated through the hall and the hearts of everyone there tonight. It was perfect send-off, an ultimate party complete with clapping, jumping, and of course, singing your hearts out.

Seeing how many hearts Alexandros has touched with their music and how much their fanbase has grown in the span of a year, it begs the question of what to expect in the future. Even though Yoohei has mentioned that he would like to focus on the present for now, we can’t help but wonder how much bigger the crowd will get by next year. From small-town crooners to world-wide superstars, it looks like we’re all witnesses to Alexandros’ growing case.

‘Tis the season to be smelly – and jolly, at least for the durian lovers cause there are so many durian-themed products in the market right now!

We have durian chocolate drink and durian milk tea by Tealive, there’s a Musang King durian burger in Penang, McDonald’s durian Mcflurry is back, and more!

Now, behold Cadbury’s durian-flavoured chocolate milk bar which is made especially for the Malaysian market (aww, how sweet!). “Cadbury Dairy Milk celebrates the flavour of Malaysia, with it’s new limited edition Durian flavour,” reads the description.

The durian-flavoured chocolate product is available for purchase on Shopee for RM17 for 2 pieces. Malaysians can also purchase the chocolate bar at local super market or convenience stores.

Cadbury Dairy Milk Durian is the 2nd localised flavour after Cadbury Dairy Milk Kopi C which pays homage to Malaysians’ love for traditional coffee shops, known as the kopitiam.

Over the next two days, all eyes will be on Good Vibes Festival 2019 (#GVF2019) that features an exciting line-up that has already exceeded the public’s expectations. Among those on the list is South Korean R&B singer-songwriter DEAN (권혁).

The inclusion of DEAN marks a new stage for Good Vibes Festival, as he was among the first South Korean act to perform at the festival, along with Korean R&B artiste singer-producer Rad Museum and New York-based Korean-American singer/producer/DJ Yaeji.

Hailing from Seoul, DEAN started his career as a hip-hop artiste with Keith Ape at the age of 16. By the age of 20, he has written songs for K-pop groups such as EXO’s Black Pearl and VIXX’s Voodoo Doll.

He was also the first Asian artist to perform at Spotify House at Austin’s SXSW Festival and has worked with a few well-known artists and producers, such as Eric Bellinger, Syd, Crush, ZICO, Anderson .Paak and more.

Good Vibes Festival 2019 marks DEAN’s second visit to Malaysia. Ahead of his performance on Sunday, we spoke to the artist about his music and the festival.

Of the tracks that you’ve released, one that really stands out is “Instagram”. Addressing loneliness and preoccupation with social media, the song has garnered quite a number of high profile covers from artistes such as IU and NCT. How do you feel about that?

It was actually an impressive experience for me. As a composer I was very used to writing songs for others. Songs that would sell, do well on charts, and make people want to listen to. One day, I realised that I couldn’t keep doing that, so I just started to write my own story. Seeing my own experience becoming a social phenomenon filled me a lot of thoughts and ideas for the future. I love everyone who loved the song.

How much of your public persona is the real Dean and how much is for the industry? Do you see Instagram as a platform to present your raw, authentic self? And how about the music you produce?

I’m not sure how people perceive DEAN, but I’ve always been doing what I wanted. I want to be myself as much as possible in all circumstances. I think people who react to DEAN are somewhat similar to me and I love people who are similar to me.

You have a reputation for pushing boundaries with your approach to your music and its visual presentation. It’s experimental and it’s up to the audience’s interpretation. What are some of the interesting interpretations that you’ve heard about your music?

“What’s this? It’s terrifying….” Lol.

Speaking of Instagram, it seems like you were staying in London for a while to prepare your new music. Is there a specific reason that you chose London to be your base for your song production? How does that environment influence your sound?

London’s weather and atmosphere influenced the song a lot. At the time I focusing on the “future” so I went to London without hesitation. I learned so much that it will take days to explain, so I want to show my feelings and thoughts in my music.

Who are you currently listening to?

Chilly Gonzales – Solo Piano I, II, III, Deb Never, Dominic Fike, Daniel Caesar, MISO, Rad Museum, and TABBER’s new songs.

Throughout your entire career, we’ve seen you work with other soulful artistes such as Anderson. Paak and The Internet’s Syd. You even performed with Daniel Caesar in Paris recently. Tell us about those experiences.

Meeting talented musicians and sharing energy with them is always a pleasant experience. Whenever I think of those times, they still come back as charming memories that mean a lot to me.

When it comes to the creative process of producing music, what usually comes to you first: the story or the melody?

It differs from time to time, but usually melody first. Making a melody is my way of “playing”. I hear melodies even when I’m completely still. Then the melodies catch the emotions I want to express and lead the story through.

What have you found inspiring this year?

I’m inspired by a lot of things. Working on the albums have made me sensitive so it’s inspiring to watch the stability and determination from people and society. Such as people who have been working the same job for more than 20 years, or people regularly starting their days early and heading to the office in the morning. A lot of my inspiration comes from society.

How would you describe your new album compared to your previous work?

Compared to my previous work, I’m focusing on the quality of the mix and master because sound design subconsciously affect people’s emotions. Music and movies are similar. Convincing audiences with a carefully planned out mise-en-scene and item settings are like convincing listeners with lyrics, the connection between tracks, and sound. My previous works were for past DEAN to enjoy and my upcoming works are for the present DEAN.

Lastly, how do you feel about coming back and playing in Malaysia, especially at Good Vibes Festival this time around?

Since the line-up is exciting, I hope I can enjoy the festival as well and watch other artists’ performances after I’m done.
