Sundays may be a drag for most, as the dread of Monday looms—but none of that was a concern for fans of South Korean boy group WINNER. About 6,500 attendees crowded Stadium Malawati, Shah Alam on the 14th of October 2018 to catch a glimpse of the fantastic foursome in the flesh.

There was undoubted excitement in the air as this was the group’s first visit to Malaysia. Organised by Macpiepro, WINNER’s “EVERYWHERE” tour was the second part of their back-to-back series—with labelmates iKON’s “CONTINUE” tour just the day before.

Source: YG Entertainment

The history of WINNER is a bittersweet one. Initially a quintet consisting of Yoon, Jinu, Hoony, Mino, and past member, Taehyun—the boys were victors of a survival show called “WIN: Who Is Next?” where as trainees they competed against the members of iKON. However there were big shoes to fill (being the first boy group debuting under YG Entertainment since BigBang) but WINNER’s colour had always been more of the sentimental soulful type. It was through their unique sounds and creative use of instruments that caught the eyes of many with their debut album.

Though after the unexpected departure of Taehyun in 2016, their music style experienced a drastic change. With a year of silence, they came back stronger than ever with a bright electronic inspired pop sound. The shift in genre was surprising but even so, the group seemed to have won the hearts of many with their natural talent.

A change from the previous day, Stadium Malawati was now covered in various shades of cool blue—the official fan colour for WINNER. INCLEs (fans of WINNER) were running around the place, trading freebies and making sure everyone had some light source of a sort that emitted a blue ray. As this was the group’s first visit, Malaysian INCLEs wanted to be sure to graciously welcome them.

Various fan account admins had even went through the trouble of giving out free LED bulbs that glowed blue to fans who didn’t own the official light stick. An act of pure charity, it was touching to see the lengths fans were willing to go to for their favourite groups. While light sticks are extremely aesthetically pleasing to look at, they do not run cheap at all. This smart move (though arguably came at the cost of the admins themselves) was a winner (pun intended) for both the artist and the fans as when the lights were dimmed come 6pm; a blue sea of lights glimmered brightly.

When the sound of “Empty” filled the stadium, the stage parted to reveal all 4 members strutting down as they sang their debut song with plenty of emotion. After “Air”, the boys greeted the crowd and introduced themselves—all in English without a translator. It was particularly impressive that leader Yoon self studied the language only within a couple of months because he wanted to communicate with his fans better. He took the lead, guiding the rest of the members as they expressed their thoughts in a common tongue with Malaysian INCLEs. After saying hello, there was a comical segue with the sound of a ringing phone before they started the 4th performance of the night; “Hello” and their latest single, “Everyday”.

As Mino disappeared backstage to prep, the remaining 3 members took the stage to interact with the crowd. Yoon stated that he really wanted to feel the atmosphere of Malaysia but couldn’t since they arrived extremely late the night before. “Instead I had great food…” he said cheekily, “…of room service.”

Nevertheless, the group managed to try local delights such as satay, mee goreng and nasi lemak. Jinu was especially insistent on satay, bringing it up again even after Yoon had already mentioned it. Hoony then teased the crowd, asking them if they were ready for the solo stages. With answers in the form of passionate yells, the trio bid their goodbyes as they slowly descended below the stage.

Source: YG Entertainment

The solo stages truly showcased each of the members of WINNER’s personalities and styles; proving how even individually they are their own performer. The stadium was dark for Mino’s stage; red lights barely illuminating him as he performed the sensual “Body” and “Turn Off The Light”. Dripping with sex appeal, Mino effortlessly pulls off the sensuous concept. Jinu switched things up for his cover of labelmate G-Dragon’s “Untitled, 2014” where his clean and crisp singing style complemented the song brilliantly. It was especially touching to finally hear him sing, as he often shies away—unsure of his potential.

Yoon made quite an entrance with his solo power ballad, “It Rains”, which truly showcased his singing capabilities. His husky voice accompanied with the climax of the song had the entire stadium on their feet, in complete awe of his range. Yoon also sang an unexpected acapella cover of John Legend’s “All Of Me” with a choir of INCLEs singing along. He then picked up a guitar and started strumming the beginning chords of “Instinctively”, which he famed after covering it on reality television singing contest “Superstar K2”. To his surprise, the entire stadium was singing along despite it being a track that he worked on before joining YG or WINNER at all. Touched by the notion, he thanked the fans before leaving the stage for the final solo act of the night; none other than Hoony.

When it came to dance, there was no stopping the powerhouse that was him. After all the ballads and acoustics, it was time to turn up the hype. Hoony’s overflowing charisma and confidence were impeccable, his passion evident from his languid movements. Performing his own song, “Serenade” and covering Taeyang’s “Ringa Linga”, he brought the house down with his performance.

WINNER

All 4 members were reunited once more shortly after, walking up towards the front of the stage to interact more with the fans. Yoon coyly asked the crowd if they were enjoying the solo stages so far before unwinding with the slower acoustic numbers. It’s within these softer intimate tracks that WINNER’s vocals truly shine, Yoon and Jinu’s harmonisation carrying them through “We Were”, “For”, “It’s Raining” and “Movie Star”. Hoony and Mino didn’t disappoint either—utilising their deep voices for a more emotional styled rap.

After a costume change, the boys came out in flashy outfits and began hyping up the crowd once again. INCLEs were pleasantly surprised when “Immature” began ringing through the stadium – one of their older tracks when Taehyun was still part of the group. They then proceeded with the addictive “Love Me Love Me”, accompanied by aesthetic neon visuals. Keeping within the theme of neon, the funky “Special Night” played next—getting everyone into the groove of the 90s.

“Island” got everyone dancing to the tropical pop number, but it was the iconic “Really Really” that got the entire stadium singing along passionately. Being the first release since WINNER rebranded as 4, it was especially moving to hear everyone ardently chanting ‘Neol johahae’. For their last song, the energetic “LA LA” played before the boys disappeared for the encore.

Source: YG Entertainment

When the lights came back on, INCLEs lost it the moment “Don’t Flirt” played from the speakers. It was yet another unexpected number, as it was from their debut album, but arguably was the track that gained them more fans. Clad in humble blue t-shirts, it was adorable to see the boys of WINNER match the theme of the night. For the last 2 songs, they requested that everyone jumped along and had fun before launching into “Really Really” and a remix of “Everyday”.

It was finally time to say goodbye, and members began reading out their messages that were given on a prompter. Hoony however kept on going against it, and even candidly blurting out “Aku cinta padamu!” The other members laughed, noting how it sounded like he was rapping when he spoke in Malay so quickly. This turned into a mini rap performance where Hoony kept on professing his love for the crowd while Mino beat boxed away. Yoon deeply thanked the crowd, saying how a singer would be nothing without people who listened to their music.

Source: YG Entertainment

During all of the goodbye speeches—something had caught Mino’s eye. The rapper with meticulous attention to detail, he quickly whispered it to Yoon who then asked in surprise, “Are those roses?” The lights of the stadium were then dimmed, to reveal a sea of colours where every INCLE was holding up an LED rose, which shined brightly. The members were literally speechless—Yoon struggled to form coherent sentences from being absolutely gobsmacked and Jinu was on a verge of tears.

The humility of the group was obvious from their reactions, not expected such love from a country they had never even visited before. “Today is the happiest day of my life,” smiled Yoon before waving the crowd goodbye.

Source: YG Entertainment

WINNER’s talent knows no boundaries, but it is disgusting considering the treatment they receive. It is no secret that they have constantly been on the receiving end of the short stick, evident even from their concerts here. For all the glam and gusto of YG Entertainment, there was barely any streamers, confetti or fireworks during the show—in comparison to iKON’s the previous day.

The favouritism of the other group was even more obvious when an iKON VCR played during the show as well, shocking INCLEs with the unprofessionalism. Taking their complains to Twitter, Malaysian INCLEs worked with Korean INCLEs to make the issue known. “They’ve always been second choice,” sighed Sarah, an INCLE attending her first Korean pop concert. “…but they’re my first!” she said as she smiled brightly. Despite it all, WINNER’s debut concert in Malaysia was a massive success. After witnessing the efforts of Malaysian INCLEs, it is no doubt that they’d return for round 2.

Source: YG Entertainment

WINNER remains to be a bittersweet mystery—each member bursting with talent yet having songs that frustratingly limits them. Whether you enjoy acoustics and emotional ballads, or perhaps have the preference for tropical pop dance tracks—WINNER does it all. And it is in their versatility in terms of genres that will continue to earn them fans for a long time coming.

The phrase “painting the town red” had never been literal until the 13th of October 2018 when South Korean boy group iKON paid us another visit with their CONTINUE Tour. Organised by Macpiepro, the concert was held at Stadium Malawati, Shah Alam—a bigger venue than their last. A total of 7,000 fans attended the event, proving how strong the fan base is here.

The group’s last visit was in 2016, freshly after the group had just made their debut. This time however, there was expectation built since they traded their boyish charms for a more mature look. Made up of 7 members – B.I., Jae, DK, Bobby, Song, Ju-Ne, and Chanwoo were the subject of Malaysian iKONICs’ adoration when they announced their 2nd tour here.

Source: YG Entertainment

Formed under YG Entertainment, iKON was a miracle group for many. Being the losing team on survival show “WIN: Who Is Next?”—where label mates WINNER debuted as champions—it seemed as if all hope was lost for the boys. However there was a surprise in store for them as both teams ended up debuting in 2015, despite the results. Garnering a decent amount of hype, the group caught the attention of many early on with their hip hop sound that was reminiscent of G-Dragon. Their rap line, consisting of leader B.I. and Bobby, had already established quite a name for themselves in the scene. After winning on the rapping survival programme, “Show Me The Money”, all eyes were on YG’s new hip-hop group.

Draped in various shades of crimson, iKONICS filled Stadium Malawati from early as 9am in order to secure the best spot for viewing their oppas. “I made sure to line up early because I was afraid of it running out of stock,” explained Ka Mun, an iKONIC clad in red who clutched her KONbat (iKON’s official light stick) adoringly. “And I can’t go for the concert without it!” She said with a laugh, waving it in glee.

The pride of K-pop groups come when they see their fans holding their light sticks — and Malaysian iKONICs weren’t about to let them down. Even before the concert started, it was hard to miss the glow of red coming from the light sticks that were already on. Fans screamed when they heard Ju-Ne singing along to the tunes that were being played, all the way from behind the stage. Excitement was in the air, for both parties involved. At 6:10pm when the lights went down, all that was audible were screams and cheers when the bombastic intro of “Bling Bling” played. All 7 members emerged in sparkling cherry suit jackets, handsome as ever, as they began their first number.

Source: YG Entertainment

iKON doesn’t disappoint when it comes to delivering high energy, song after song. The crowd was in for a treat of fireworks, streamers and even fire flares. It’s hard not to stay pumped when tracks like “Sinosijak” and the iconic “Rhythm Ta” were blaring from the speakers, making everyone bop their heads to the hip-hop dance tracks. They took a break to introduce themselves in English individually, with American-raised Bobby taking the lead. The boys made sure to ask the fans to be safe while enjoying the concert, which gained them choruses of ‘awww’s. The chatter turned into talks of holidays, where Jae mentioned, “I heard the night view of Kuala Lumpur is amazing.” With that segue, the relaxing “Cocktail” began playing accompanied with visuals of a beach getaway.

B.I. and Bobby then took the stage, explaining the meaning behind their latest song, “Goodbye Road”. The pair even played a game with the crowd, dividing the stadium into groups to see who could sing louder. When Bobby lost and had to do aegyo (acting in a cute manner), he embarrassedly ran off with B.I. chasing after him.

iKON
Source: YG Entertainment

This signalled the beginning of solo stages, with the vocal line (consisting of Ju-Ne, Jae, DK, Song and Chanwoo) showcasing their strengths with the tender “Perfect”. It was in this performance that we could truly hear the hidden talents of the group, as the vocals are often saturated amongst loud beat drops and auto-tune. Ju-Ne’s naturally raspy voice enhanced the song, crooning along to the ballad like it was his second nature.

However all traces of nostalgia and romance were removed for the hard hitting “One and Only”. Bathed in red lights, B.I. sits on a throne in a carefree fashion—oozing royalty. After a flawless execution of the song, Bobby took the stage for his solo track—“HOLUP!”. With his fast paced delivery being the wow factor of the track, the man did not disappoint with his performance. The pair was reunited for the classic “Anthem” which had the entire stadium chanting along to the addictive intro of “iKON is coming to town”. The rest of members emerged from below the stage to join them towards the end, adding to the hype of song before launching into the equally powerful “B-DAY”.

Source: YG Entertainment

They toned things down with their soothing tracks of “My Type”, “Rubber Band”, “Best Friend” and “Everything” which was overflowing with charm. Even though they were famed for their hip-hop image, iKON proves to be versatile by being able to flawlessly pull off endearing concepts as well. But one does not simply speak of their slower songs without mentioning the legendary “Love Scenario”. The song that broke the charts and became the song that even kindergarteners were avidly singing along to; the entire stadium sang their hearts out to the anthem of the year.

The boys took a break to interact with the crowd once more, further explaining about their latest track. “B.I. wrote the song…but I sang it very well!” joked Jae, gaining a couple of laughs from the adoring fans. DK even showed a little sneak peak of the choreo, teasing the crowd of what to expect. It was then that they announced that Malaysian iKONICs were in for a surprise as they were going to perform “Goodbye Road” for the first time live in a concert. After the emotional number, they were back at it again with the sexy dance track “Killing Me” which showcased their dancing skills in the fast paced beat drop. They then transitioned into the rock track, “Freedom”, where once again Ju-Ne fully utilised his deep voice for.

Source: YG Entertainment

As they edged towards the last song of the night, the slow “Just For You”, Malaysian iKONICs wished B.I. many happy returns of the day. Bobby was in awe hearing the stadium sing ‘Happy birthday’ in Korean—noting how even though they were of different cultures, the fans were willing to learn it for them. With deep appreciation for their fans, iKON disappeared backstage to prepare for their encore stages, with began with another round of “Love Scenario”.

The surprises didn’t stop as they performed another never before seen stages, “Adore You” and “Don’t Let Me Know”, which are both off their new EP. And just when fans thought it couldn’t get any better, the pulsating beat of “Dumb and Dumber” began ringing through the stadium. Everyone was on their feet, jumping along in an addictive haze to the tune. Even though it was the final performance, there were no sorrows as both iKON and iKONICs let loose to the music.

Source: YG Entertainment

Overall, iKON is definitely a group worth checking out if one has a preference for gritty hip-hop dance tracks. It is in these performances that they truly shine and exude a strong ‘YG’ flavour. However, fret not if it is not up your alley as they do do more mellow choices. The boys of iKON won’t let you go that easily—with their overflowing charms and charisma; it’s hard not to fall in love.

If you’re reading this article, you’ve probably watch Il Divo’s videos on YouTube. However, it pales in comparison when you’re watching them perform live.

Hailed as the first and most successful classical crossover group across the globe, the beloved popera group finally returned to our local shores after 4 years. Tenors David Miller and Urs Buhler, together with baritone Carlos Marin and Sebastien Izambard were in Malaysia for their “Timeless” tour.

With a show named “Timeless”, we were expecting to hear lots of classic tunes and love songs. Besides serenading the Malaysian audience at the Arena of Stars, Resorts World Genting, with most of the tracks from their 9th and newly-released studio album of the same name, the group also blessed us with plenty of old favourites.

Following the instrumentation piece of “Overture”, Il Divo kicked off their Malaysian concert with “Hola” (a Spanish-language version of Adele’s “Hello”). Concert-goers got the chance to hear the brand new songs from “Timeless” including John Legend’s “All Of Me”, Robbie William’s “Angels”, Natalie Cole’s “Unforgettable”, and Elvis Presley’s “Love Me Tender”.

During the 2-hour concert, which was divided into Act 1 and Act 2, Il Divo gave us a masterclass in the art of operatic genius when they sang mainly in Italian and Spanish. It was set for a night of passion, laughter and powerful vocals as the audience was transported back in time when the quarter performed songs from popular soundtracks – “Come What May” (“Moulin Rouge”), “My Hear Will Akways Go On” (“Titanic”).

Although there were 6 Latin dancers (2 male, 4 females) for a handful of songs, we felt that the “Timeless” tour worked best when it was just Il Divo letting their soaring vocals take centre stage, while backed by the superb orchestra. At the end of the day, their greatest instrument are still their vocals.

While Il Divo shared vocal duties for most selections, one of the highlights was when each singer performed their own solo number (OMG the solos!) as it allowed their individuality to shine through. The introvert of the group, Urs, recalled how when he was 10 years old, he’d dwell on a big book of mythical creatures. “Die Zauberflote” was Mozart’s magic flute about declaration of love to a princess. When it came time for Carlos to sing “Granada” alone, he was every bit of showmanship personified.

For Act 2, the talented singers looked better, having changed into their tuxedos. After serenading the crowd with a few more songs from “Timeless”, it was Sebastian’s turn. While Urs talked about his past, Sebastian decided to delve into the present. Having released another solo LP “We Came Here To Love”, the 45-year-old French singer sang his own single, “Up”. The dancey pop track was drastically different from the opera songs they’ve been singing. It was a nice change of pace but felt odd being sandwich with the rest of their set list.

Right before David performed his solo effort titled, “Vesti la giubba Pagliacci”, he received a few screams when he took off his tie. When he launched into Ruggero Leoncavallo’s 1892 operatic piece, it felt like the vocalist had struck a lightning of emotion through everyone’s heart. It was extremely passionate and rightfully deserved the crowd’s standing ovation. David’s solo was easily our favourite among the guys.

Speaking of standing ovation, Il Divo ended the night with a stunning rendition of “Somewhere”, from “West Side Story”. To quote a fan, if ever given a chance to attend a Il Divo concert, beg, buy, or steal a ticket – it’s not a concert to be missed, especially if you’re a fan of this genre of music.

Il Divo’s “Timeless” tour setlist:

Act 1:

“Overture”, “Hello”, “Right Here Waiting”, “Pour que tu maimes” Encore, “Angels”, “Die Zauberflote” (Urs’ solo), “Come What May”, “All Of Me”, “Love Me Tender”, “Quien Sera”, “Granada (Carlos’ solo), “My Heart Will Go On”.

Act 2:

“Grazie Amore Mio” (Love Story – Casablanca Section), “Unforgettable”, “Unchained Melody”, “Smile”, “Up” (Sebastian’s solo), “What A Wonderful World”, “I Will Always Love You”, “Vesti la giubba Pagliacci” (David’s solo), “La Vida Sin Amor”, “Somewhere”.

Encore:

“Regresa a Mi (Unbreak My Heart)”, “My Way”.

There is a reason why Jacky Cheung (张学友)’s concerts are always sold out. Fans aren’t just showing up to hear him sing, there’s a whole production value involved that guarantees to leave a lasting impression.

Despite only performing at the same venue in Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil for a 3-day concert 9 months ago, his “A Classic Tour” encore sold out all 36,000 tickets for another 3-night shows taking place this week. Having said that, more than half of the audience last night (Friday, 5th October) were experiencing “A Classic Tour” for the first time.

Jacky Cheung

Cheung’s latest “A Classic Tour”, which started all the way back in October 2016, celebrates its 192nd, 193rd, and 194th worldwide tour this weekend. His previous Malaysian shows were the 132nd, 133rd and 134th. Impressive isn’t it? The Cantopop King will be wrapping “A Classic Tour” in Hong Kong come January 2019, which will mark a new record of 220 shows in total.

The concert venue in Axiata Arena was turned into a spectacular four-sided stage with giant LED screens that changed throughout the show to showcase plenty of visual effects. The entire stage consisted of movable components, rising and falling with the melodies while morphing seamlessly from molten lava to flowing waterfalls. At one point it looked like rotating compass, and another, resembling a 3-tier cake. It was a dazzling treat for the eyes for sure.

At 8pm sharp, the 57-year-singer launched into 8 songs back-to-back without much pause. When it came time to interact with the predominantly Chinese Malaysians that turned up that night, Cheung expressed his comfortability in being speaking in Cantonese – a language he’s more fluent in.

The stadium was also treated like part of the stage. Concert-goer were given a glow stick that synchronised to the music and production, which changed colour to match the song during the show. Since it was hard to see everyone, Cheung requested all in attendance to wave their glow sticks to let him know that he’s doing a good job. It was like an ocean of magical stars when everybody’s glow sticks were flickering and swaying from side to side.

There were so many highlights throughout the show. When he performed “The Departed”, a life-sized white origami boat surfaced from beneath. The stage floor was transform into a body water as the boat sailed around the stage as he serenaded the crowd.

As per tradition, Cheung would play a “little game” using a kiss cam where the couple that displayed the cutest and most lovey-dovey display of affection will receive a special prize before the end of the concert. As he sang “She Comes To Listen To My Concert”, the kiss cam panned to a number of unsuspecting couples and families.

The lucky couple was later projected to the large screen on stage. When Cheung realised that the woman was pregnant, he jokingly asked if they were married, adding that it’s a-okay even if they aren’t. The pop star also added that he hope they’re expecting a boy.

The special gift was a photo frame of the couple kissing, signed by the singer himself, with a lovely message wishing that the husband and wife, together with their child will be happy forever. Aw…

During “Spring Wind Autumn Rain” and “Your Name My Surname”, the stage was transformed into a mini cathedral with impressive LED screens. For his last number  “Blessing”, we got to see the dancers dressed as dancing kings and queens with giant portraits of drumming soldiers.

Despite all the futuristic glitz and glamour, the brightest star of the night was undoubtably the “Heavenly King” himself. His voice remains the biggest attraction out of the entire production. Whether he’s performing an upbeat number, or delivering an emotional song, his vocals always come through. At 57, his stamina is superhuman.

Cheung previously said that he named the show “A Classic Tour” because “he wanted to perform the songs in the most classic way possible, harking back to a show he once did in 1987 which had a similar four-sided stage”. With 57 albums and 30 years worth of songs under his belt, it’ll take more than a 3-hour concert to perform everything.

So, the God of Songs did the next best thing during his encore – he string together some of his biggest hits (including “Kiss Goodbye”, “Every Day I Love You More” and “Amour”, among others) into a 14-track medley.

The superstar was obviously on his A-game, but how did we as the audience fare? Cheung scored us a generous 100 marks. “Since I’ve already gave the first night 100, will tomorrow’s crowd hit 101?” the singer joked.

Jacky Cheung’s “A Classic Tour” setlist:

Encore:

“用余生去爱/ 给朋友/ 心如刀割/ 不老的传说/ 离开以后/ 一千个伤心的理由/ 只想一生跟你走/ 我等到花儿也谢了/ 分手总要在雨天/ 吻别/ 每天爱你多一些/ 李香兰/ AMOUR/ 情已逝”, “如果爱”.
