A decade before the original “Star Trek” and its main stars were the centre of attention, there was Discovery.
Thanks to the newly-released trailer for “Star Trek: Discovery” by CBS, we now have our very first look at Michelle Yeoh as a starfleet captain. The Malaysian icon will be playing Captain Philippa Georgiou in the TV spin-off of the iconic sci-fi “Star Trek” franchise.
According to CBS, Yeoh’s Captain Philippa Georgiou is the commander of the USS Shenzhou. She is also the mentor of first officer Michael Burnham (played by “The Walking Dead” actress Sonequa Martin-Green). The new series will follow Michael Burnham’s journey as she faces a host of obstacles in order to become a captain.
Sticking true to its “discovery” moniker, the TV show will follow these 2 characters as they explore new worlds, forge new alliances, come in contact with hostile Klingons, and many more. Although the 2 women on the command deck is something fresh, the first trailer doesn’t reveal anything substantial.
Take the image above for example, it’s not clear if Philippa Georgiou and Michael Burnham are dressed in dessert outfits for desert exploration or if they’re undercover. As writer Jacob Hall suggest, the 2 officers don’t seem to be hiding too hard given that “Burnham’s belt is equipped with an old school flip communicator and what looks like a tricorder (as seen in the original series)”.
In addition, the trailer also gives a nod to a Vulcan ambassador and Spock’s father – Sarek (played by James Frain). He appears to also be a mentor of sorts to Burnham, telling her that “great unifiers” need “a profound cause”. He also remark that she will “never learn Vulcan” because her “tongue is too human”.
It’ll be interesting to see how these characters are all connected. But in the meantime, enjoy the first trailer here:
