The coolest moment from last night’s Oscar Nominations is the fact that “Logan” actually managed to receive a Best Adapted Screenplay nod. This is a milestone achievement for comic book movies as it marks only the second time in Oscar history in which a comic book movie has received recognition in one of the BIG 8 categories (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Adapted Screenplay).
The first, of course, is Heath Ledger’s Best Supporting Actor nod for his groundbreaking performance in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight”.
Prior to “Logan” and “The Dark Knight”, comic book movies only received nominations in technical categories such as visual effects, cinematography, and sound, which is silly. This isn’t the 80s anymore. There are many comic book movies that aren’t just good comic book movies, but great films regardless of genre. The likes of “Batman Begins”, “Captain America: Winter Soldier” and “Captain America: Civil War” come to mind.
With “Logan” receiving an Oscar nomination, it seems like change could finally be happening at The Academy. Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman went on Twitter to congratulate one of the writers (and the director) of “Logan”, James Mangold.
If Hollywood kept statistics for the most assists in nominations/awards … @mang0ld would be the league leader. Today, he finally got the recognition he deserves. Congrats brother! @WolverineMovie #Logan #Wolverine #Oscars2018 pic.twitter.com/Zp2CDo9mCA

To which Mangold replied:
Anything's possible when the work comes from a team joined at the hip, Hugh. You made this movie happen and protected and guided us with your brilliant performance and profound faith.

Scott Frank and Michael Green penned the script for “Logan” alongside James Mangold. Many consider “Logan” to be one of the greatest comic book movies ever made, only behind “The Dark Knight Rises”.
