A BMW driver who drove against traffic has caused the death of a university student.
The incident, which happened at midnight yesterday (Thursday, 16th February) along Jalan Tun Razak, killed the student on the spot. The deceased has been identified as Ahmad Alrefaee M. Azmi, 21, who hailed from Bandar Mahkota Cheras. He was driving a Perodua Myvi when the unfortunate accident occurred.
According to Asia One, a distress call was received at 2.06am, and 8 firefighters arrived at the site 6 minutes later. City Traffic Investigation and Legal Affairs staff officer Deputy Supt Shafie Daud explained that the BMW driver, who is 23 year old, entered the opposing carriageway from the KLCC tunnel and was unable to re-enter the right lane.
“The driver continued travelling on the wrong lane and crashed into a white Myvi on Jalan Tun Razak near the library. The Myvi driver was killed on the spot, while the BMW driver sustained minor injuries,” he said.
The Myvi driver was travelling alone while the BMW driver had 4 passengers in her car. 4 people in the car, including the driver, escaped unscathed but one passenger was slightly injured.
The driver has underwent a urine and blood test and is confirmed to not have been under the influence of alcohol. Officials who are investigating the case have recorded statements from witnesses and the driver but was unable to replay the scene as there were no CCTVs nearby.
The case has been classified as reckless driving.
