Leia Organa has always been more than just a princess or a damsel in distress. Not only is she a diplomat, but she’s also a spy, a warrior, and an undercover agent.
One may think that the princess has updated her status to the “Queen of Alderaan” in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens“, but what we’re about to see in the movie is a more “battle weary” and “broken hearted” Leia.
To be more precise, the “Star Wars” universe doesn’t even call her “Princess Leia” anymore. She is now referred to as “General Leia”.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director and co-writer J.J. Abrams revealed that Leia is now a General in the “Star Wars” universe.
However, he also said:
But … there’s a moment in the movie where a character sort of slips and calls her “Princess”.
If we have to assume, we can only imagine Harrison Ford‘s character aka Han Solo being the only one who slips and lovingly calls her “princess”. After all, Carrie Fisher, who is returning to the film to reprise her role as Leia, shared a heart-wrenching embrace with Ford at a Resistance base in the first official trailer
Leia will play a pretty pivotal role to the storyline of the highly anticipated sequel.
Abrams told EW:
The stakes are pretty high in the story for her, so there’s not much goofing around where Leia’s concerned.
“But it felt historic to have her, especially with Harrison, back in scenes together. I can only imagine the baggage that they bring to it, I’m just a fan who loves this stuff, but they’ve been living with it — and living in it — since ’77,” he added.
Abrams also talked about her experience working with Fisher, describing her as “crazy brilliant” and “incredible” even though she hadn’t acted for years. “So I think that for her, it was a bigger adjustment, which she made beautifully,” he added.
Fisher descrbied the older General Leia as “solitary”, further stating that he general is “under a lot of pressure” and “committed as ever to her cause”. She added, “But I would imagine feeling somewhat defeated, tired, and pissed.”
Meanwhile, EW has released more than a dozen of new images from the film as part of its “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” double-issue preview.
EW will apparently reveal more details on the characters Maz Kanata and Supreme Leader Snoke, as well as Luke Skywalker’s absence in the poster and trailer.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is set to be released on 17th Dec 2015.
