The Penang Island Jazz Festival returns for its tenth consecutive row. The festival that is supported by Malaysia Major Events, a division of Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) an agency under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture will be happening from December 5th, 2013 (Thursday) to December 8th, 2013 (Sunday).
This year, inconjunction with the celebration of its 10th edition, the festival features an outdoor and indoor setting. Apart from, Jazz By The Beach which will feature local and international performers taking stage, the festival also includes other supporting musical events such as Sunrise @ Tropical Spice Garden, Workshops, Talks and Forums, Photograph and Poster Exhibitions, After Hours Jazz Jam and Creative Malaysia Fringe Stages.
The festival this year however, will start with an opening concert — An Evening With Casey Abrams which will be happening at the Bayview Beach Resort Ballroom on December 5th, 2013. Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Casey Abrams is the finalist of the 10th season of American Idol and is known for his creative jazz renditions on American Idol. Malaysia’s very own Liyana Fizi will be opening for Casey’s concert in Penang.
New to the Penang Island Jazz Festival, the festival together with Tropical Spice Garden presents the first ever Sunrise @ TSG which showcases performances by Amrita Soon, Liyana Fizi and Ray Rozells in the morning of December 7th, 2013 (Saturday). The showcase will take place in an exceptional setting of The Tropical Spice Gardens.
The outdoor stage, Jazz By The Beach which takes place on December 7th, 2013 (Saturday) and December 8th, 2013 (Sunday) at Bayview Beach Resort Gardens will see performances by The Freddy Cole Quartet, Alison Burns & Martin Taylor, Hedvig Mollestad Trio, Okan Ersan Quartet, Jazz Kamikaze, Michael Schiefel & Carsten Dearr, Yoon Jeong Heo Black String, Jazz Connection, Vinalog and Penang born and bred songbird, Bihzhu.
To keep with the festival’s goal of creating a complete music festival experience, supporting musical activities will be taking place with the four day period of the festival. These activities include the Creative Malaysia Programme which will be held on three different Fringe Stages that will see performers from a wide range of musical backgrounds partake in it. Other activities that will be taking place are workshops that are conducted by Casey Abrams, JazzKamikaze, ESKA and Okan Ersan to name a few, Jazz Gallery Exhibition which will exhibit a collection of Penang’s Popular Music of the 1940s to 1960s and many more.
