Written and directed by Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, A Separation revolves around the lives of a married couple Nader and Simin, who are faced with a difficult decision of either improving the life of their child by moving to another country or staying in Iran and looking after Nader’s (the husband) ailing father who is suffering from Alzheimer’s. However, Simin is determined to get a divorce and leave the country with her daughter.
According to the Los Angeles Times Film Critic, Asghar Farhadi’s thrilling domestic drama offers acute insights into human motivations and behaviour as well as a compelling look at what goes on behind a particular curtain that almost never gets raised. The movie was also designated a Critic’s Pick by the Film Reviewers of New York Times in 2011:
