Ben Affleck is ready to delve deeper into his caped crusader role because it was reported that the actor may co-write and helm a new “Batman” standalone movie.
This report confirmed Latino Review’s earlier rumour about a new “Batman” solo movie, which will see Affleck reprising his “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” role. The film is also rumoured to be arriving as soon as November 2018, going up against Marvel’s upcoming superhero movie, “Captain Marvel“.
First reported by Deadline Hollywood, sources confirmed to Variety that Affleck is in talks to co-write the standalone “Batman” feature with Geoff Johns after he has finished filming “Live By Night” which is scheduled for a November start.
Plot details are scarce so far, but Affleck is expected to return and reprise his role. The solo film may mark Affleck’s 3rd appearance as the caped crusader in the DC Cinematic Universe as he will once again play Batman in 2017’s “Justice League: Part One”. It is unclear whether Oscar-winning screenwriter Chris Terrio (who will write both “Justice League” films) will still be involved in writing the script, as earlier rumour suggested that the movie will be based on a script written by him. However, his involvement is expected as he penned a movie directed by Affleck, “Argo”.
Warner Bros. did not respond to Variety’s request for comment, but since San Diego Comic-Con 2015 is happening, Warner Bros. and DC may just reveal their plans for their ever-growing DC Cinematic Universe this coming weekend.
It is unsure when production for the solo movie will start, but it may take a while for Affleck to pen the script as he is currently focusing on getting his film “Live By Night” off the ground.
Regarding the earlier rumour, Screen Rant shared their thoughts, revealing that the new “Batman” solo film may “start out older and more experienced”. They further said that it “shouldn’t have focus so much” on the caped crusader’s origins, especially since everyone already knows what turned Bruce Wayne into Batman. They also suggested that the villainous characters such as The Joker (played byJared Leto), Deadshot (played by Will Smith) and Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) from David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad” could appear in the solo movie.
No words on whether a new “Superman” solo film will be developed, but Henry Cavill, who plays the lead character in 2013’s “Man of Steel”, expressed hopes to see more stories about his character to be told. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said:
He’s a tough character to tell. People like the darker vigilante. I think it speaks to the human psyche more easily rather than the god-like being that we can’t really understand.
He then added, “Once we have a more expansive universe we can delve more into the character of Superman and hopefully tell more stories.”
Zack Snyder’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” is slated for release on 24th March 2016 while “Suicide Squad” will be released on 5th August 2016. Affleck can be seen next in Gavin O’Connor’ “The Accountant”, which is slated for release on 29th January 2016.
