We always knew they’d come back.
The aliens from the 1996 sci-fi blockbuster, “Independence Day”, are returning to the sequel and they’re invading the Earth again with better weapons and advanced technology.
Titled “Independence Day: Resurgence”, the sequel has been in development for a total of 2 decades.
Roland Emmerich returns to the director’s chair for the sequel to “Independence Day”, the original film that redefined the event movie genre. He is directing it based on a screenplay co-written by himself, Dean Devlin, and Carter Blanchard. The sequel is partt of Emmerich’s planned “Independence Day” trilogy and the 3rd film is currently underway.
The sequel takes place 20 years after the events of the first film. Humans are using recovered alien technology to protect the planet from the brink of extinction after the first alien invasion
However, nothing can prepare them for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. A new task force of alien ships are coming to Earth again as the aliens in the first film were able to send a distress signal before their final defeat.
As such, a new generation of fighters must unite to fight off the next wave of extraterrestrials, especially before the aliens delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale.
Majority of the original cast members including Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox, and Judd Hirsch are returning to reprise their respective roles. They will be joined by Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Joey King, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Sela Ward, and Angelababy.
Thoug the epic sci-fi disaster film helped launch Will Smith‘s career, the sequel will not see the “Suicide Squad” actor returning to play Marine pilot hero character Col. Steven Hiller. Instead, we will see Jessie Usher playing the son of Smith’s character.
